Title: Natural Disasters Heading

What is a hurricane?
A hurricane is a very destructive and dangerous storm. The hurricanes are filled with rain, strong winds, lightning, thunder, hail and tornadoes.
Once they hit land, they do slow down and weaken Warm water feeds the hurricane and helps them grow larger and stronger.

What causes a hurricane?

A hurricane is causes by hot dry air off the coast of Africa merging with warm moist air near the equator

How do they measure hurricanes?

Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale
Category 5
4 3 2 1

Wind speed (mph) 156

131155 111130 96110 7495

Storm surge (feet) More than18

Additional classifications
Tropical storm Tropical depression 3973 038 03 0

How do hurricanes damage land?

Erosion of sand from beaches. Flooding of low lying areas. Loss of vegetation: crops, trees, grasses, etc. from wind and salt water.

How do hurricanes damage humans?

Contaminated water supply.

Diseases in humans.
Broken infrastructure (roads, water lines, pipes, rail lines, power lines)

Where can you find hurricanes?

Hurricanes are found along coastal areas close to the equator.

Satellite pictures from hurricane Katrina.

After

What is a flood?
An overflowing of water onto land that is normally dry

What causes floods?

Floods can be caused by several factors. Excessive rains, overflowing rivers, deforestation, and agricultural practices.

How do floods damage land?

Erosion of soil from some areas. Deposition of large amounts of sediment. Loss of vegetation: washing away, drowning in water, covered by sediment.

How do floods damage humans?

Contaminated water supply.

Diseases in humans.
Broken infrastructure (roads, water lines, pipes, rail lines, power lines)

Where do floods occur?

Floods typically occur in areas near bodies of water such as lakes, rivers, and oceans.
Floods also occur in areas that get large amounts of rain.

Satellite pictures from New Orleans.

What is a tornado?
A rotating column of air that touches both the base of a cloud and the ground.

What causes a tornado?

Tornados form in locations where warm moist air and cold dry air meet. These conditions do not always form tornadoes, scientists do not fully understand how and why they form.

How do tornadoes damage land?

Erosion of land due to high winds. Loss of vegetation: high winds, hail, heavy rains.

How do tornadoes damage humans?

Contaminated water supply. Diseases in humans. Broken infrastructure (roads, water lines, pipes, rail lines, power lines)

Where do tornadoes occur?

Tornado alley between the Rocky Mountains and the
Appalachian Mountains.

Title: Natural Disasters Heading

What is an earthquake?
A sudden movement of Earths crust caused by the release of stress along fault lines

What causes earthquakes?

Earths surface has cracks in it. The cracks meet at places called faults. There is pressure at the faults. When the pressure gets to high the faults move.

How is land damaged by earthquakes?

Shifting of large amounts of soil. Possible tsunami.

Loss of vegetation: shifting soil, falling rocks and buildings

How are humans damaged by earthquakes?

Contaminated water supply. Diseases in humans. Broken infrastructure (roads, water lines, pipes, rail lines, power lines)

Where do earthquakes occur?

Along fault lines.

How are earthquakes measured?

Before

What is a tsunami?
A large ocean wave caused by an underwater earthquake and/or volcanic eruption.

What causes a tsunami?

Tsunamis form when a great deal of water is displaced. Ex: earthquakes push up the water

What causes a tsunami?

How is land damaged by tsunamis?

Erosion of great amounts of soil. Deposition of large amounts of soil. Loss of vegetation: movement by water, drowned in water, covered by sediments

How are humans damaged by tsunamis?

Contaminated water supply. Diseases in humans. Broken infrastructure (roads, water lines, pipes, rail lines, power lines)

Where do tsunamis occur?

Along coast lines, near fault lines

After

What is a volcanoes?
An opening in the Earths crust through which molten lava, ash, and gases are released.

What causes volcanoes?

A crack in the Earths crust. Are usually found near where tectonic plates meet. Also found on the ocean floor at hot spots.

How is land damaged by volcanoes?

Soil covered in lava and ash. Loss of vegetation: covered by ash/lava, burned by lava

How are humans damaged by volcanoes?

Contaminated water supply. Diseases in humans. Broken infrastructure (roads, water lines, pipes, rail lines, power lines)

Where do volcanoes occur?

Along fault lines, on the ocean floor in hot spots

How are volcano eruptions measured?

Volcanic Explosivity Index

What is a drought?
A long period of abnormally low rainfall.

What causes droughts?

Droughts are completely natural. The frequency and length of droughts can be effected by changes in: climate, ocean temperature, jet stream, local landscape and agriculture practices.

How is land damaged by droughts?

Erosion of soil due to wind. Deposition of sediments blown by wind. Loss of vegetation due to lack of rain. Increased risk of wild fires.

How are humans damaged by droughts?

Lack of water. Diseases in humans. Destruction of crops and livestock. Starvation of humans and livestock.

Where do droughts occur?

How are droughts measured?

Palmer Hydrological Index

Satellite PicturesBefore and after

What is a wildfire?
Any large fire that spreads rapidly and is hard to extinguish

What causes wildfires?

Wildfires are completely natural. Caused by: lightning, humans, slash and burn farming, volcanic activity, underground coal fires.

How is land damaged by wildfires?

Loss of vegetation due to fire Erosion of soil due to loss of vegetation- wind blows away soil.

How are humans damaged by wildfires?

Destruction of crops and livestock. Starvation of humans and livestock. Broken infrastructure (roads, water lines, pipes, rail lines, power lines)

Where do wildfires occur?
