MLA Citations

general notes & special cases

REMEMBER
O Citations should be double-spaced

but you should NOT skip lines between citations. O If your citation is more than one line, the subsequent lines should have a hanging indent of 5 spaces (i.e. tab key)

REMEMBER
O Citations should be listed

alphabetically by the author name or whatever other information is listed at the beginning of the citation O More than one work by the same author? See the OWL. O You must list the medium of publication at the end of every citation (print, web, film, cd, dvd, etc.)

REMEMBER
O All words in the titles of sources should

be capitalized except for articles (the, of, an, etc.) unless the article is the first word of the title O Use italics for the titles of books, magazines, films, etc. (long works) and quotation marks for songs, poems, articles, etc. (short works)

REMEMBER
O URLs for web sources are not required.
O Any article retrieved from an online

database should include the name of the database in the citation, in italics. O Any information that cannot be found for an online source should be noted using abbreviations like the following: n.p. for no publisher, n.d. for no date of publication
