Theories of Human Motivation

Good
S1: Use appropriate compliments / reinforcements to pupils who are able to achieve the learning objective. Effect: Pupils feel appreciated and will work harder. S2: Given ample and appropriate time for difficult task. Effect: Pupils are able to achieve the learning objective and have the feelings of achievement. S3: Content of the task is related to the pupils interest. Effect: Pupils are able to recognise the content and further enable them to understand the topic. It increases their motivation to learn.

Poor
S1: Regular usage of compliments / reinforcements to the pupils. Effect: Listening to the same and repeated compliments can lead to insincerity of the compliments given. S2: Given little time for difficult task. Effect: Pupils may feel it is a bit unfair as they have difficulties in completing the task in short time.

S3: Content of the task is not related to the pupils interest. Effect: Pupils are unfamiliar to the content, thus have difficulties to understand the topic. The content is not able to attract their attention, thus leading to boredom and decreasing their motivation.

#Find and present successful cases of good motivation strategies on young ESL learners.
Case 1: Elvin is an active and naughty kid from Year 3K. He
tends to disturb other pupils during presentation of the lesson. However, he does not really do well in the task given. After some guidance and help from the teacher and his peers, Elvin is able to perform well and get the answers correctly. The teacher has given him praise through the stamp which says Well done on his worksheet. He smiles back when he discovers his achievement is appreciated and from that day onwards, he keeps completing his task and performs and participates actively in the tasks given.

Case 2: Young learners are certainly very active and full

with curiosity. During the lesson, the teacher rarely used interesting teaching aids and anything related to their experiences. The pupils tend to loss their interest in learning and causes them to do other things. Thus, the teacher tried different method by using characters from their favourite TV programmes and colourful and attractive pictures and videos. The pupils soon anticipated for every lesson and participated well in the tasks given. They were motivated to learn from day to day and soon, everyone was very eager to participate in the lesson.
