EOSINOPHIL

12-17 .

Strong eosinophilc granules in the cytoplasm and a

bilobed nucleus. Hydrolytic enzymes in the granules: peroxidase and arylsulphatase. Attracted to th site of anaphylactoid reaction by mast cell degranulation. Eosinophilia seen in pemphigus foliaceous, vegetans and granuloma faciale, mycosis fungoides, urticaria, atopic dermatitis.

LYMPHOCYTE

8 .

Small round deeply basophilic nucleus.

Chromatin granules. Narrow rim of cytoplasm. Leucocyte common antigen-immunomarker of

lymphocyte.

NEUTROPHIL

10-15 .

Salt and pepper appearance.

Lobulated nucleus with several segments connected only

by a bridge of nucleoplasm. Two types of pale pink granules. a) azurophilic granules (20%) b) specific granules.

MONOCYTE

12-15 m.

Stain for lysosomal enzymes like acid phosphatase.

Intracytoplasmic molecules(CD 68), detected in paraffin

sections. Antitrypsin and anti chemotrypsin : immunemarkers.

MAST CELL

Bone marrow derived cells seen in dermis.

Oval to spindle shaped with a centrally located round to

oval nucleus. Metachromatic granules in the cytoplasm. Stain with toluidine blue, alcian blue, giemsa. Mast cell degranulation in immediate and delayed hypersensitivity

HISTIOCYTE

Also called macrophages.

20-80.
Bone marrow origin. Clear vesicular light staining nucleus. Clear nuclear

membrane. Larger and contain more lysososmal enzymes compared monocytes.

EPITHELOID CELL

Spindle shaped or elongated cell with Large, vesicular

nucleus with well defined nuclear membrane and pale cytoplasm. Cells formed by fusion of histiocytes. Cell margins indistinct. Seen in tuberculoid and sarcoid granulomas.

LANGHANS GIANT CELL

Formed by fusion of many epitheloid giant cells, under the influence of good host cell immunity. Seen in tuberculoid granulomas.

TOUTAN GIANT CELL

Central foamy cytoplasm, floret or wreath-like nuclear

arrangement at the periphery. Seen in xanthomas and juvenile xanthogranulomas.

FOAM CELL

FOREIGN BODY GIANT CELL

Formed by fusion of many macrophages.

Seen in suppurative and foreign body granulomas.

PLASMA CELL

10.

Abundant deeply basophilic homogenous cytoplasm.

Eccentrically placed round nucleus with a deeply

basophilic coarse, chromatin attached to the nuclear membrane.(cartwheel appearance)

TUBERCULOID GRANULOMA
