The study on internet usage in UiTM Shah Alam.

What is Internet? The internet in simple terms is a network of the interlinked computer networking worldwide, which is accessible to the general public.

Internet has an impact in many areas including the higher education system A lot of students use internets in many aspects. Primary source was used in conducting this survey. Participations of 30 students from Faculty of Chemical Engineering in UiTM Shah Alam.

To find out how long students spend on the internet

To examine the effects of surfing internet

Objectives of the study

To investigate the type of activities students engage in when they use the internet

To obtain the reasons why students use the internet

It can be concluded that more students spent 5 to 6 hours surfed internet on weekend. They spent their time on internet more on weekend than weekdays. This is because they have to attend class on weekdays. And this contribute to their time spent on internet less on weekdays and more on weekend.

It can be concluded that majority of the respondents surf the internet at night. This is because their time at morning was for attending class and meeting friends. At night, the surf internet for completing their assignment.

can be concluded that, It can be concluded that the majority used Wi-Fi as their internet connection. This is because Wi-Fi is free and high coverage at UiTM.

It can be concluded that the most of the respondent preferably used internet at home rather than caf and library because at home is more comfortable. This finding is similar to survey of internet usage of an American agricultural college done by Rhoades et al.(2007), it was found that most of them used internet at their homes.

the students agree that they use the internet the most for social networking which is 26 respondents.

The percentage of students were concerned about problems related while surfing the internet

It can be concluded that majority of respondents were concern about physical problems related while surfing the internet such as back strain and eye strain. This is because these physical problems will affect their daily routines.

It can be concluded that the majority of the students used the internet to research their subjects. According to Dicky Urianto Halimawan ( Industrial Engineering of Pelita HarapanUniversity Tangerang), students had used the internet to help them doing assignments and can discover many informations in multiple format.

It can be concluded that the internet is the best medium to connect with other people. According to Hampton & Wellman 2011, people use the internet to communicate with people mostly over an e-mail and to maintain their interpersonal relationship.

It can be concluded that the internet is the medium of entertainment. According to Boyd and Ellision (2007), they said that social networking sites as web-based services that allow individuals to construct a public within a bounded system and articulate a list of other use with whom they share a connection. Four popular types of a social media and networking sites are Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and iPhone.

It is recommended that students should reduce the time for surfing the internet for unnecessary things It is recommended that students need to confirm the person that they met for first time in social network. It is recommended that authorities do more campaign to educate the students about effect occurred such as eye strain and back strain due to stay too long in front of the computer. Emphasize the importance of student participation in the social world the campus offers. Campuses should offer a variety of social clubs and organizations for student involvement and administrators must actively encouraging students to join these clubs and to get offline.
