The stereotype of the Australian macho began with Captain James Cook

Around the 1850s there was a gold rush that brought immigrants from all the world to Australia.

At the beginings of the 20th century those inmigrants were converted to macho stereotypes: the gold digger, the bushranger, the drover and the soldier.

More recently those sterotypes have passed to the surfer or the surf lifesaver

All of this with the purpose of create nationalist images

Nowadays there is also a day to celebrate immigrants. March 21st

Australias immigration policy welcomes people from all over the world and does not discriminate on racial, cultural or religious grounds. They embrace the spectrum of religious beliefs: Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh and other places of worship are found in almost every major city.

While the white goverment of Australia, following the example of other Britain colonies, tried to make a nationalism based in white stereotypes, there was also a Day of Mourning and protest
In the sesquicentenary or 150th anniversary of white settlement in 1938 Aboriginal people protested.

For Aboriginals who sought full citizenship rights, the celebratory clichs were offensive.

In the protest meeting they wrote: You are the New Australians, but we are the Old Australians. [] You came here only recently, and you took our land away from us by force. [] By your cruelty and collousness towars the Aborigines you stand condemned in the eyes of the civilised world.

Nevertheless, it was until 2008 that president Prime Minister Kevin Rudd made a formal apology to Australias indigenous people

Gender inequality still exists in Australia despite the progress achieved over the past 40 years.

Julia Gillard was recently elected as Prime Minister of Australia. Because of this, women may have a chance of improved equality.

Womens average earnings in Australia have dropped from 87 cents for every dollar earned by a man in 2004 to 84 cents in 2008.

Australia is always listed as one of the individualistic countries

It has a lot of tolerance, as we can see, with immigrants. But this tolerance can be originated by an individualistic ideology.

And families are becoming smaller and smaller which reminds us they also have a Britain inheritance we cant leave aside.
