Good morning students! We are 8 semester Bsc Nursing students of PIMS College of Nursing. We are here to tell you a story which you might be already familiar with. Tina was a 7th std girl. One day, Tina went to the bathroom at school and saw drops of blood on her panties. She got scared and worried and didnt tell anyone about it. That day her mother saw a blood stain on Tinas salwar and became very happy. She called Tina and said Today you have become a woman Im so proud of you!. Tinas mother,who s a medical professionalist, explained to her about menstruation. Lets see how she explained about this beautiful physiological process.

INTERNAL STRUCTURES:
Vagina uterus fallopian tubes ovaries

EXTERNAL STRUCTURES:
vaginal orifice vestibules hymen vestibular glands

OVARIES:
The two ovaries are the female gonads. They are ovoid in shape and pink in color. Their main function is formation of ova.

FALLOPIAN TUBES:
It extends from the sides of the uterus. They move the ovum from the ovary to uterus by peristalsis and cilliary movements. Fertilization of ovum takes place in the fallopian tube.

UTERUS:
It is the central organ of female genitalia. Bleeding occurs from the uterus during menstruation. Uterus is the site of fetal development

VAGINA:
Menstrual flow exits the body through the vagina. It is the passage for child birth

The MENSTRUAL CYCLE is a series of events occurring regularly in females every 26-30 days through out the child bearing period. OVULATION is the process by which the ovum is released. It is stimulated by secretion of luteinizing hormone by the anterior pituitary gland. MENSTRUATION also is a result of these hormonal changes. The average length of menstrual cycle is 28 days. The normal duration of menstruation is about

4 days.

Then you think about menstrual hygiene....

MENSTRUAL HYGIENE REFERS TO MAINTAINANCE OF HYGIENE DURING THE MENSTRUAL PERIOD WHICH INCLUDE USE OF CLEAN PADS , CHANGING OF SOAKED PADS WHEN EVER NECESSARY, PERINEAL AND PERSONAL HYGIENE WITH THE USUAL DAILY ACTIVITIES , EXERCISES DIET AND WAYS OF PREVENTING DISCOMFORT AND PROBLEM RELATED TO MENSTRUATION..

Hygiene related practices of women during menstruation are of considerable importance as it has a health impart in terms of increased vulnerability to reproductive tract infection.

Increased knowledge about mentruation right from childhood may escalate safe practicer and may help in mitigating the suffering of million of women. Technology offers sanitary pads ,tampoons,or menstrual cups to deal with flow. The user have to decide what suits her best. Absorbent pads may be noticeable in form fitting cloths.

Menstrual period health taking behavior including appropriate nutrition, exercise and physical activity, personal hygiene and appropriate use of medication based on physician prescription.

DOS

Change pads 2-3 times a day. Dispose the pads separate from general wastes. Should clean genetalia whenever urinates especially at the period of menstruation. Use plain water to clean genetalia. Change dresses daily and take bath twice daily for maintenance of proper hygiene. Take adequate rest during periods. Wash hands using soap and water after changing pads.

DONTS

Never skip meals. No restrictions from going out or school at periods of mensruation. Avoid heavy works. No restrictions for works in kitchen. Never reuse the pads. Never feel shy on talking/sharing about mensruation and related problems. It is not admirable to use perfumed pads or tampons. Using powders in genital area is not recommended.
