The timer supervises FAC C H HR and FAC C H FR message acknowledgements of L2 in BTS The timer supervises SDC C H message acknowledgements of L2 in BTS

BC F MO (BSDATA)

Principle: When the BTS transmits a DL layer-2 frame on the air (e.g. an I-frame with an embedded layer 3 message) the BTS starts the timer T200 and waits for the acknowledgement frame from the MS. The acknowledgement frame can be another I-frame sent by the MS in the UL (if the MS has to transmit a layer-3 DTAP message anyway) as well as RECEIVE READY (RR) (if there is nothing to be transmitted on layer 3). If the acknowledgement from the MS is not received within T200 the transmission of the layer 2 frame is repeated and T200 restarted. The total number of repetitions is restricted to N200, a fixed value specified by GSM which depends on the control channel types: N200(SDCCH)=23, N200(SACCH)=5, N200(FACCH/FR)=34, N200(FACCH/HR)=29 If T200 expires after the last layer 2 frame repetition the BTS sends an ERROR INDICATION with cause T200 expired N200+1 times (followed by a RELEASE INDICATION) message to the BSC, which releases the associated resources. In Telkomsel JAN-09: T200_s was increased from 220ms 760ms i.e. 0 27, this change results total time to change 220ms*(5+1)=1320ms 760ms*(5+1)=4560ms this results that T3101 (3sec) will expiry always sooner than T200_s As example T200_f is def value 160ms (parameter as zero) and we have FR call: 160ms*(34+1)=160ms*35=5.6 sec so MS have to send L2 ACK back to BTS with in 5.6sec Example2: If we increase T200_f to value 14 (results in FR call 240ms) , it results 260ms*(34+1)=260*35=9.1 sec now MS has a bit longer time to provide L2 ACK to BTS In this scenario it is likely that T3107 (def is 6 sec will exp) and DX321 is issued (instead of DX320). DX321 is big contributor to TCH A-bis fails (c1084). Figures 83% has been seen. Ref network: 200ms500ms results more A-bis drops (c1084) and reduced SDCCH drops T3107 has expired DX321 (Est_indication_fails)

note that speech frames (can) uses AMR coded but signaling FACCH does not FACCH (and other signaling) are more sensitive to interference (when C/I goes down, it is likely that signaling channels will die first) speech is still OK, but signaling channels has been lost it does not improve RF drops if we increase T200 (it is unlikely scenario that MS will provide ACK back to BTS between 5.6sec and 9.1 sec) S13 will have improvements to this issue Robust AMR signaling: To enhance probability of successful associated control channels signaling (ACCH), robustness of FACCH/SACCH
channel is improved in 3GPP Rel6 by use of repeated blocks. 1 Nokia Siemens Networks Matti Puhto / 10.1.09
