Definiton of Terms
Strategy- A specific plan of action - a tactic or scheme which the teacher devices to achieve goals and learning objectives Instructional or teaching strategy- overall plan for a learning experience

Methods a way, an approach ,or a process to communicate information Instructional methods the techniques and approaches used by the teacher to make the learner understand the content to be learned

Definiton of Terms
Instructional materials or tools -actual means or vehicle by which information is shared with the learner Device teaching aid or tool, a visual aid or instructional aid Technique art or skill of a teachers performance in teaching, the manner in which the teacher applies a method to achieve an immediate objective

Lecture Method
Derived from Greek word lectura(to read) Most traditional method of teaching Simple conveying of knowledge in one-way channel of communication Introduce new topics Clarify difficult concepts Integrate and synthesize a large body of knowledge

Advantages of Lecture Method


Specific period of time-uniformity of knowledge Economical and cost effective Develop students listening abilities Effective method to impart knowledge in the lower level of Cognitive Domain

Disadvantage
Few teachers are good leturers Lends it to teaching facts Not conducive in meeting students learning needs (passive role) Allows limited attention span (learner)

Discussion
Imparts lesson through interaction (teacherstudent/ student-student) Opportunity to share insights or understanding of the topic Apply principles, concepts of previously introduced body of knowledge and clarify it, Advanced announcement of topics or watching a videotape,etc.

Advantages of Discussion Method


Learn the process of group problem solving. Develop and evaluate students beliefs and positions Foster attitude change through understanding, allow freedom to assert their opinions or views Many students like and prefer this to other methods

Disadvantages of the Discussion Method


Use more time to think and interact Effective only in small groups due to time constraint May not be efficient way of communicating information Useful only if students come prepared with needed background info

Question and Answer Technique


Teacher initiates learning by asking, probing or inquiring from students their ideas regarding the subj.matter. Integral to teaching but often taken for granted Can increase motivation eagerness to learn Guide learners thought process and direct to an area of interest

Factual questions- simple recall Probing questions to further explain Multiple choice to begin a discussion Open-ended questions- requires construction of answer Discussion-stimulating- help discussion move along for a clearer or better view of subj.matter

Questions that guide problem solving sequence questions Rhetorical questions stimulate thinking Note: teacher should give time for students to respond : unexpected answer should not be rejected but processed

Audiovisual aids
Traditional method that can reinforce teaching and learning. Supplement to lecture / prelude to discussion Enhance teaching and stimulate students interest and participation
