My Class Observation Diary (Month of June and July)

June last week

PUP It was the last week of the month, when I had the first week of my observation. Since it was the first day of my class observation, I really felt nervous. Our coordinating professor, Prof. Cleotilde Servigon, introduced me and my tandem partner to the class. They had their long quiz, and as I watched them, I remembered the time when I was also taking up the same subjectif I also looked like them when taking exams (looking frustrated and in pain).

The second section that we had was the BBTE 1-1. They had their graded recitationidentifying the parts of the typewriter. I was a little bit surprised because it was already three years since I last saw that typewriter and identified its parts. Thank God, I and my co-student teacher were able to had it successful. The last one was the freshmen Marketing Management Students. Our subject matter is General Psychology. We were introduced by Prof. Artemus Cruz, our coordination professor for this class, as students included in the upper 2% of our class. We got shy, especially me, and I was thankful that MM students seemed no to understand what Prof. Cruz means. I know they would expect a lot if they were able to do so. But in general, I had a great experience for a first time of class observation. It really feels great to hear your students greeting you Hi, Maam or Good afternoon, Maam. I know from this day, I am going to love being with my students.

July 2013

1st week

PUP

This week has been very tiring for me, but much more fulfilling and happy. I taught keyboarding techniques for the first two sections I handle. It was really amusing to see them listening to me as I dictated letters for them to strike on their keyboards. Some of them were obviously having hard time to follow everything I said without looking on their keyboards. Some of them were vocally saying that they were giving up, but I told them that acquiring the skills in typing quickly will bring them a lot of benefits.

On the other hand, I had my first lecture about the nature and scope of psychology in MM 1-2. It was little bit tiring but all of the tiredness I felt easily gone when I heard them say Opo, Maam. Madami po when I asked if they have learnt something. I cant help but smile that time. I told myself that maybe I was really destined to be a teacher. I also had my observation in the Basic Shorthand class of BBTE 11 on Thursday. I enjoyed it too, like the other days. We just observed Prof. Esparagoza as she taught the class.

My Lesson Plan in General Psychology

Republic of the Philippines Polytechnic University of the Philippines Quezon City Campus WORKING PLAN

Area : General Psychology Time : 03:00pm-6:00pm Date : July 2, 2013 No. of Students: 55
I. Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to: 1. Define what psychology is. 2. Explain the goals of psychology. 3. Differentiate each method of research used in psychology. 4. Appreciate the importance of psychology. II. Concept The Nature and Scope of Psychology Sub Concept Definition of Psychology Importance of Psychology Methods of Research used in Psychology

Materials Chalkboard Chalk Eraser III. Strategies A. Preparation 1. Routine Activities Prayer Greetings Checking of Attendance 2. Motivation Activity 1. Since it is the first day of meeting, everyone is asked to introduce themselves and give one word that will describe them. Afterwards tell the class that one of the subjects being tackled in psychology is personality. Since each of them has different personality traits, they will tend to behave in different ways and that is one of the focuses of psychology- the behavior of an individual. In addition, each behavior that we possess has an underlying reason. This is the reason why we must be able to understand each and everyone and not to be judgmental by what we only see. Activity 2. Ask the class to list down the words that they think of when they hear the word psychology. Students are also asked to write their explanations why they think those words are connected in this field.

B. Presentation 1. From the second activity, select the words given by the students which are related to psychology. Afterwards, give its definition. *Psychology is the science of human behavior and mental processes. It was derived from the Greek words psyche and logos meaning soul and study. 2. Next, explain the goals of psychology. The goals of psychology are: * To describe/ to understand- to be empathetic to behavior of a person * To predict- predict behaviors of a person, why people behave this ways *To control/to influence- modifying ones behavior into a more desirable way. 3. Third, discuss the importance of psychology *Psychology helps us understand the nature and importance of human interactions. Furthermore, it contributes by helping educate our society to learn and think critically. 4. Finally, enumerate and differentiate the methods of research used in psychology. *Experimental Methodthe most widely used scientific way of gathering information. The psychologists usually treat two variables in this methodindependent and dependent variable. *Observation Method--- A field study method of making observations of what is going on in the environment. The investigator goes in the field with a set of questions and makes observations. *Survey Methodin this method, the investigator asks potential respondents about their attitudes, their fears or their reactions or perceptions about incidence like failing in board examination. It can use tools such as questionnaires. *Test Method- the test itself is the research instrument. It measure all kinds of abilities, interests, attitudes and achievements. *Case histories-- the psychologist study behavior through using information found in anecdotal records or accounts stored in hospital, schools or municipal halls. *Note: The students are motivated to participate in the class discussion and give their ideas on the topic being tackled.

C. Evaluation Conduct a socialized recitation on what they have learned in the class. Asked them to give a brief summary. Conduct a quiz regarding the topic discussed. IV. Assignment 1. How Socrates, Plato and Aristotle defined soul? 2. Prepare for quiz next meeting. Reference Evangelista, Lourdes L. LHS This is my first day of class observation outside PUPQC, and I really felt nervous because when I first say my critic teacher, she looked strict and terror. But as time passed that day, I noticed that she is very jolly and nice. I introduced myself to the class, as she told me. I found out myself, that it is really a different feeling when a college student and a high school student call you Maam and Teacher. They had their assignment that is to make a menu plan which they continued doing in the class. I roam around the classroom to see their works. From this activity, I reflected that teaching will really be more effective if you let your students do the task that spoon feed them with all the information.

Retention is higher in this way. I almost had my first discussion in this class (on the spot) about the Food and Beverage Organization, but the time was really short. I realized that 45 minutes of discussion is very short. I was surprise that in a moment, they will enter the room, and in just a few minutes, I will hear them saying, Goodbye, Maam Ramirez and Maam Carla

2nd week I had my classes with DICT 1-1, BBTE 1-1, and MM 1-2 on Tuesday. In the DICT, there was a little problem that occurred. Some of the students were not able to come to the class on time because they just made their assignments 15 minutes before the class starts. As a consequence, Maam Bing did not let them enter the room. But before the time ended, she explained to them the reason of doing that. She told the class that she is imposing discipline, that is, assignment should be done at home and not in school. From this scenario, I realized that being a teacher is not just providing information that your students must know, but also, you have to teach them the proper discipline.

On the other hand, our class in BBTE went well, they only had their quiz. The MM students, furthermore, also had their quiz and we had discussion about heredity. On Thursday, I checked the diary notebooks of BBTE Students in their Basic Shorthand class. Thiers should be written, of course, in shorthand.

LHS
My class observation in Lagro High School went smoothly. I observed Dr. Ramirez as she teaches the class while me, seating in the table in front. After the class, I check their quizzes about organizational chart. In Friday, I had my discussion about the responsibilities and duties of a Food and Beverage Personnel, because my CT have to go to a burial of the father of their coteacher. From this scenario, I remembered the Article V of the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers.

3rd week

PUP
We handled the class in keyboarding solely because Maam Bing was sick this day. As for the ICT students, we had our practice and quiz for those who arrived last time in the class late. In the BBTE, they already had their practice of typing paragraphs with GWAM and we are already through with letters. In the MM, I discussed about the human development and I really love teaching this section because they are always alive and childish. This class went well and enjoyable. In the Shorthand class, we observed Maam Che as she teaches the class about the proper strokes of words with sh, ch, and j. She also taught brief forms and derivatives.

Area : General Psychology Time : 03:00pm-6:00pm Date : July 9, 2013 No. of Students: 55 I. Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to: 1. Define human development. 2. Describe the factors that affect human development. 3. Explain the sequential stages of human development. 4. Appreciate the value of human life. II. Concept Development of an Individual Sub Concept Factors affecting the development of an individual Sequential stages in development

Materials Chalkboard Chalk Eraser III. Strategies A. Preparation 1. Routine Activities Greetings Checking of Attendance

2. Motivation In order to know if the students have an idea of the human development, ask some students to describe how an individual grows from infancy up to late adulthood. They are also going to ask what factors they think affects the development of an individual.

B. Presentation 1. Give the definition of the word development, growth and maturation. *Development describes the growth of humans throughout the lifespan, from conception to death. The scientific study of human development seeks to understand and explain how and why people change throughout life. This includes all aspects of human growth, including physical, emotional, intellectual, social, perceptual, and personality development. *Growth refers to the quantitative changes such as an increase in size or structure. *Maturation is the end or goal of development and growth. 2. Next, discuss how human life begins. *Individual life can be said to begin when the female ovum is fertilized by the male sperm. Every human being begins life as a single cell, formed when fathers sperm fertilizes mothers egg. Fertilization normally takes place in the mothers Fallopian tube, which connects the uterus (womb) with the ovary. A woman ordinarily has two tubes and two ovaries, one at each side of her uterus. Every month one of the ovaries in turn releases an egg (ovum) which passes slowly along the tube towards the womb cavity If the egg is not fertilized within 12 hours or so of being released, it dies; it cannot develop further. But if the woman has sexual intercourse during the days of her monthly cycle just before or at the time when an egg has been released from the ovary, then many sperm cells released by her partner may travel up to the Fallopian tube and one may fertilize the egg. When fertilization is completed and the nuclei of egg and sperm have combined, a new being comes into existence and is capable of further development. Because the parents are human - belonging to the species Homo sapiens - the new being is also human. Fertilization (by which we mean conception) marks the beginning of the human lifespan. At this moment of conception, we have the zygote. This single fertilized cell divides into many cells, thus the bone cells, the hair cells and all types of cells develop which gradually assume specialized forms and functions. In this state we speak of the embryo which lasts until around the second moth of prenatal life and which takes a human form. Form this time, it is called a fetus. Behavior begins with bodily movements at about the beginning of the fetal period.

3. Third, explain the factors that affect the human development. *Human development involves a continuous interaction between biological predisposition determined by ones genes, heredity and the experiences encountered while growing up in a particular family, culture and environment. *Heredity refers to the process by which various characteristics or traits are transmitted to the offspring through the genes of parents/ ancestors at the time fertilization. The hereditary units we receive form our parents and transmit to our offspring are carried by microscopic particles known as CHROMOSOMES, found in the nucleus of each cell in the body. Most body cells contain 46 chromosomes. At conception, the human being receives 23 chromosomes from the fathers sperm and 23 chromosomes from the mothers ovum. These 46 chromosomes form 23 pairs. Each chromosome is composed of many individual hereditary units called GENES. The total number of genes in each human chromosome is around 1, 000 or more. Chromosomes and genes will influence psychological as well as physical characteristics. Most genes are dominant, others are recessive, and some are sexlinked. The colorings of hair, skin, and eyes, the sex of the new human being, and factors influencing height and build, are determined at fertilization by information on the DNA. *Gender -- A babys sex is determined at fertilization. A chromosome from the fathers sperm determines whether the child is male or female. If an X chromosome is present, the baby is a girl; if a Y chromosome is carried by the sperm instead, the baby is a boy. XX- chromosome of female XY- chromosome of female *Twins -- Occasionally two eggs are released by the ovary and fertilized. This results in fraternal twins who are different in appearance and may be of different sexes because their genes form from two eggs and two sperm cells. Rarely, one embryo splits into two and both cells develop separately, as identical twins, similar in appearance. "They have the same genetic make-up and apparently the whole genetic message is the same in both of them. Nevertheless, they are obviously different human beings."

*Principles of Heredity Principle of Reproduction. Individuals of the same family have similar genes and traits. Each parent contributes half of his or her genes to the child and the child in turn contributes half of his or her gen to his or her children.
Principle of Variation. It is also known as the Principle of Individual Differences. No two individuals of the same kind are very exactly alike. Even if a child inherits the traits from his parents, the child may still differ to a certain degree to his parents, so too of the brothers and sisters. Even though identical twins have identical hereditary traits, yet they differ to some extents- in physical, metal emotional, social, motor and moral-spiritual aspects.

Principle of Chance. Because genes are assorted, by chance and there is no way of controlling the assortment, each child will be different form everyone else. The sex of the child is determined by chance the father, for instance, cannot command the Y chromosome to unite with the X chromosome of the mother, or the Y chromosome to meet with the X chromosome of the mother. Principles of Dominance and Recessiveness. Some genes are dominant, others are recessive. If both member of a gene pair are dominant, the child will manifest the trait determined by the dominant gene. If one gene is dominant and the other gene is recessive, the child will manifest the trait determined by the dominant gene, but will also carry the recessive gene which may be expressed later on in the offspring. A recessive trait can only appear when both gens of the parents are recessive. Dominant Genes: brown eyes, dark hair, curly hair, normal color vision, normal blood Recessive Genes: blue eyes, light blonde/ red hair, straight hair color blindness Principle of Sex-linked Traits- Pair 23 (sex chromosomes) determines the sex of the individual and carries gene for certain traits that are called sex linked. Color blindness, hemophilia (failure of the blood to clot) and baldness are examples of sex-linked traits which are evident mostly in men these traits are carried by the same gene that determine the sex of the individual.

*Abnormalities of the Chromosome Abnormalities are linked to the 21 pairs and 23 pairs of chromosomes or the lack of specific genes or absence of the whole chromosomes. PHENYLKETONURIA (PKU)- a mental retardation that may be caused by lack of specific gens or absence of the whole chromosomes. This disease is manifested in an inability to metabolize important amino acid. TURNERS SYNDROMEit is a condition wherein a female fails to develop sexually at puberty resulting from cases in which her X chromosome is single, instead of normal XX. A male with an extra Y chromosome (XYY) may cause increase in height and with usually aggressive or violent behavior. The presence of the third chromosome in the 21 pair of the two normal pairs results in Down syndrome or Mongolism.

*Environmental Factors That Affect Development Environment --It includes all the conditions inside and outside an organism that influence its behavior. INTERNAL ENVIRONMENTit is the immediate environment which includes: INTRACELLULAR ENVIRONMENT- consist of all the genetic materials held by the cell membrane EXTRACELLULAR ENVIRONMENT- consists of the blood, hormones, and lymph fluids in the body.

EXTERNAL ENVIRONMENT-includes: PRENATAL ENVIRONMENT- the organism is influenced by conditions before birth. These conditions or forces include the amniotic fluid that surround the fetus, nutrition and excretion of waste products, infections, chemical changes resulting to maternal stress, exposure to radiation, smoking, drugs and alcohol. Abnormalities may result if the prenatal environment is defective.
POSTNATAL ENVIRONMENT- the life of the child after birth continues to come under the influence of varied environmental forces, such as physical environment (things in the world that directly affects us, such as food, water, sunlight, medicines, air, etc.) and social environment (human beings which influence us by direct contact such as our family, friends, classmates or through print media and non-print media. 4. Finally, describe the sequential stages of development.
Prenatal Period-the period from conception to birth. Infancybirth to two years. Early Childhoodexploratory and inquisitive period. Late Childhoodelementary school period. Puberty Stageleading to physical and sexual maturation. Early Adolescenceteenage/young adolescent; late high school period. Late Adolescenceyouth/older adolescent; development of intellectual and social skills. Early Adulthoodstart of productive years; establishing personal and economic independence. Middle Agetime for preparation for retirement; deterioration of some physical and physiological functioning. Old Age/Late Adulthoodperiod of retirement; continuing declination of physical, physiological and mental functioning.

*Note: The students are motivated to participate in the class discussion and give their ideas on the topic being tackled.

C. Evaluation 1. A short role playing activity showing how an individual grows and how he is affected by some factors can be used to measure their learning. 2. Conduct a socialized recitation on what they have learned in the class. Asked them to give a brief summary. 3. Conduct a quiz regarding the topic discussed. IV. Assignment 1. Which do you think greatly influence the human developmentthe nature or the nurture? Explain and support your answer in not less than 1, 200 words. 2. Prepare for quiz next meeting. Reference

LHS
We had the nutri-quiz on Thursday and my CT was assigned to be the head of the event. I was the one she asked to prepare the questions. I also become the facilitator during this event. The said activity went well with fourth year students from the other elective class as winner. I also had my discussion about the duties and responsibilities of a Head Waiter. On Friday, we had the finals of the nutriquiz, wherein, all the winning contestants yesterday from grades 7, 8 and third and fourth year were the contestants. The activity ended with fourth year students hailed as the winners. In the afternoon, the inauguration of the Castello Building was held and Alfred Vargas attended the event. All the female students were happy to see him and always shout whenever he waves his hand at them.

4th week PUP On Tuesday, I only had my classes in the afternoon which is the MM 1-2, because I attended the annual general assembly of the organization where I belong, the Future Business Teachers Education (FBTO). We had our quiz in Psychology about our past lessons on human development. I and my partner conducted a role playing activity wherein they are going to enact the developmental tasks identified by Havighurst which an individual should accomplish in a certain stage of his life. The activity went well and my students were really good in acting. In the steno class, on Thursday, we just a review of their past lesson in preparation for their quiz.

LHS We did not have any formal classes for two days because my Critic teacher conducted an activity for the culinary students. They had their food fest wherein they are going to sell the foods they cooked. This is done in celebration of the nutrition month. I was amused while seeing my students, because they are really good in their craft and they really earned a lot of money which they used to pay for the film showing they are going to attend.
