Creating a Positive Atmosphere

Create a positive learning environment

We are the designers and managers of the physical education program We must set the stage for learning by creating a positive, exciting class atmosphere Most students want to listen, participate, and learn from physical educators who are competent and prepared for class We must be knowledgeable about the subject content (professional competency), be able to perform the skills, and be able to manage behavior effectively

Examine your self

Socrates: the unexamined life is not worth living if you dont examine yourself as a teacher, you might as well give up now! Some of the questions you should ask your self:
Am I tuned-in? Am I enthusiastic? Am I flexible? Am I personable?

Am I tuned in?
Know what is going on during class at all time

Act immediately, stopping misbehavior before it spreads

Am I enthusiastic?
You must be enthusiastic about what you are teaching Your enthusiasm will spread to the students, helping to promote a positive, warm, and nurturing class climate

Am I flexible
Adapt as well as behavioral strategy

If you have designed and initiated a behavioral or performance contract with a student, you may need to renegotiate with the contract if it proves insufficient

Am I personable
Learn the names of your students so you can greet them and say good-bye to them by name How about the larger class? How to identify the students?
Before class starts, identify a group of students on which to focus during class that day Spend no more than 30 to 45 seconds with each student before moving to the next The following day identify another set of students who will receive your attention and so on

One final word about names: always use a students name respectfully

Show to your students that you care

Use positive approaches

All students need to fell the belong, are special, and are an integral part of the class Give equal attention to the student will help bring the class together as a unit as well as help develop class Recognize students successes by advertise the success of your students through school advertisement, newspaper or public bulletin boards The ways:
Catch students being good

Expects students to follow your directions Keep cool and address problems quickly Focus on the behavior to be corrected Be consistent
Your yes should remain yes

Always check for compliance Respond the same way to the same behavior Ensure consistency among all physical education staff

Catch your students being good

Recognize students successes by advertise the success of your students through school advertisement, newspaper or public bulletin boards And many more

Expects students to follow your directions

Give instructions once, twice if you believe the students are deeply involved in an activity and excited and simply did not hear the instruction, but no more! The more you give an instruction, the less likely your students are to follow it More successful to give the instruction in a positive assertive (tegas) voice, then remain silent, maintain eye contact, and wait for your students to comply (fulfill)

Keep your cool and address problems quickly

If you expect your students to behave, you must set a good example by being in control of your self When a student breaks a rule, you need to act, not react Refrain (hold on) from making on-the-spot judgments Make sure you know what happened before accusing a student of a violation Remember that misbehaviors seldom start with bad intentions

Dont allow behavior problems continue or they will spreading through the class, escalating into a major problem Remain calm, take the student aside and in a straightforward manner, explain the rule & consequence for not following it When communicating with a student, use direct eye contact, which conveys a positive and assertive message Have the student repeat the rule and how she/he will follow it in the future

Focus on the behavior to be corrects

When students misbehave, word your reprimands (teguran) carefully Describe the behavior rather than labeling or attacking the student
Ex: dona, you are unmotivatedyou might say, you are not participating during class exercise Develop a we attitude The student needs to know that he is working in concert with you to solve the behavior problem Then, when you say, what can we do to solve this problem? you focus on the behavior, not the student This approach makes the student feel as if you care and really want to help

Be consistent
Your students must know what they can expect from you and what you expect of them Your Yes should remain Yes
Turning no to yes and yes to no is a sure way to cause behavior problems Be consistent ojo mencla lan mencle

Always check for compliance

Telling a student to do a task but not checking to see that he has done it can crate an inconsistent approach to behavior management
Class, please perform each activity at each station, recording your performances as you go Class, since its the end of semester, I need you to clean out your lockers and turn in your locks

Praise those who are doing the activity correctly, using them as role models, so other students will be more likely to stay on-task

Respond the same way to the same behavior

Dont be moody

Depending on your mood, you may often unintentionally treat the same behavior by one student or another in different ways
What you punish a student for one day, you may ignore the next time misbehavior occurs Responding inconsistently to the same behavior makes your behavior unpredictable Develop a reasonable and predictable consequence for each misbehavior

Ensure consistency among all phsyical education staff

All the physical education staff at your school must work as a unit, setting the same basic rules and expectations for students behavior
This prevents students becoming confused when moving from teacher and teacher, semester to semester, because they can accurately predict what will be expected of them

Among teachers must support each other
