WHAT IS ARTHASASTRA?

Kautilya's Arthashastra is the oldest book on Management available

to the world. It was written by Kautilya in 300 BC. It means 'Scripture of Wealth'. The main focus of the book is on creation and management of wealth. It consists of 15 chapter, 380 Shlokas and 4968 Sutras.

KAUTILYA :THE KING MAKER

Kautilya (also known as Chanakya and Vishnugupta) was responsible for bringing down the Nanda dynasty. Established his able student Chandragupta Mourya on the throne as the emperor .Hence, he is called a King Maker! As a political thinker, he was the first to visualize the concept of a 'Nation' for the first time in Human History. He is also credited with having masterminded the defeat of Alexander the Great in India, when he was on his march to conquer the world.

LEADER

In Kautilyas framework the king was the leader.

1) Primary GOAL of the leader Prajasukhe Sukham Raja, Prajacha Hite Hitam.. What is dear to the king is not beneficial to him, but what is dear to the subjects is beneficial to him (1.19.34)1.

II) The DUTY of the king is

YOGA-KSHEMA
implies the idea of welfare, wellbeing, including the idea of happiness, prosperity and so on.

III) Leadership Values:

The essence of leadership, he stresses, lies in its acceptance by the subjects.

Kautilya says that leader ship counts on: Pramada (excess) Alasya (inactivity)
to be watched for and avoided

Kautilya insisted on a leader who was virtuous.

Benefits of a VIRTUOUS leader:

The king who protects the subjects according to law earns spiritual merit (3.1.41). When the king is active the servants become active following his example. If he is remiss they too become remiss along with him (1.19.12). A righteous leader gains the loyalty and love of dependent members. (7.5.10) A righteous leader not only passes on his qualities to others, but also attracts right talent to further his mission.

He states that the leader should be TRAINED in three specific areas: Arthashastra Nitishastra
