What is A Book Review?

INTRODUCTION
O Identify the book you are going to review.
O Include author, title, date of publication, etc. O May include short background of the author. O State the authors goal in writing the book. O Why the author write on this specific

subject? O What specific contribution did the author intend to make?

BRIEF SUMMARY
O This is the main body of the review.
O Describe the content and organization of

the book. What to expect in the book. O May include most important points tackled. O Comprising arguments and evidences raised by the author. Good and bad points.

BRIEF SUMMARY
O State how consistent or inconsistent the

author has become through out the whole story/passage. O Predict the characteristics of the author. O Remember! Do not get stuck with details in this part, this is to only prepare the reader for your critical assessment.

CRITICAL ASSESSMENT
O Lengthiest part of the book review. O Discussion of the contributions made by

the author. (From critics point of view) O May include the CENTRAL ARGUMENT OF THE AUTHOR, and state your opinion. O Identify the authors PERSPECTIVE, try to critically evaluate why he come up with those arguments.

CRITICAL ASSESSMENT
O Enumerate all CONFLICTS the author

mentioned, and analyze each, point per point. O Compare the conflicts/problems mentioned from other resources/readings. O Give similarities and differences of arguments against your personal views. O Remember! You may or you may not agree to the author.

CONCLUSION
O Assess the organization and style of the

book. Is it clearly written? Is it concise? Vague? Well-organized? Determine whether this book is intended for a specific group of readers? Offer a final review of the book. How valuable the book is? Is it worth reading?

RECOMMENDATION
O Contains reasons why people should read

the entirety of the book. O Would you recommend to the author to write another book similar to the first? Maybe pertaining to a different group of subjects. O Would you recommend the book for Christian believers? How will it benefit the Ministry? O Recognize the essential points that may help in enhancing the Ministrys stand.
