Computer networks & its types

Presented by:Jyoti MBA-1

Network

introduction
Computer network is a collection of computers Which are connecting together, so that they can communicate with each other. The components in a network system are normally connected together through a cable. A single computing system in a network is often called a node and its computer is called a host. Sharing of information and resources is the main objective of computer network.

Benefits of networking
Exchange of information Sharing of resources Reduced cost Increased reliability Flexible working environment

Types of networks
Networks are mainly of three types:Local area network (LAN) Metropolitan area network (MAN) Wide area network (WAN)

Local area network (LAN)

Local area network cover a distance of few feet to few kilometer .LAN are privately owned networks within a single building or campus of few km in size. small organizations and institutions generally have this type of network. for eg. Local area network having computers of several departments like sales, production, finance etc. these are connected with each other through a central server, having shared printer and storage unit attached to it.

lan

metropolitan area network (mAN)

Metropolitan area network are spreading over an entire city. It may be a single network or a group of several local area network . This way, resources can be shared from LAN to LAN and from computer to computer also. for eg: MANs are mainly owned by large organizations to interconnect all their branches across a city.

MAN

wide area network (wAN)

Wide area network provide interconnectivity without the distance limit. WAN can spread over a country or entire world to share the data and resources . A wide area network is a group containing several LANs and MANs. In WAN the cost to transmit the data is high because the transmition media used in WAN is either a satalite or telephone line .

WAN

Difference b/w LAN,MAN and WAN

LAN Interconnection of Computer within a Building . high speed length is 1km to 10 km rarely MAN Interconnection of computers within a city . Moderate speed length is 40 km WAN Interconnection of computers within all countries. low speed length is unlimited.

Difference b/w LAN,MAN and WAN

LAN simple to install No. of nodes that can be attached to a server is 200 For eg : office, hospital , college lab etc. MAN WAN complex than LAN complex than LAN and MAN Maximum no. of Unlimited no. of nodes is 500 nodes can be attached For eg: A cable T.V For eg: interstate network banking N/W & airline reservation system etc.
