The Portuguese World Exhibition was the

largest exhibition in Portugal. Its aim was to
celebrate both the centennial dates of the
Foundation of Portugal in 1140 and the
Restoration of Independence in 1640.

established with the legacy of Calouste
Gulbenkian. After his death in 1955, his

Portugal loses Macau to China, since it was a
Portuguese territory since 1557. Macau had
been the first European commercial
warehouse in China and the last European
colony in that region. It was given to
Chinese authorities in 1999.
