the 20th Century

In Portugal,most precisely in 1908, some


revolutionary movements happened which
changed the country, like the regicide of D.

Proclamation of the Republic happened on


the 5th October 1910. During the World War
I, Portugal was involved in several revolts
against the Republic and the PIDE- that was
like a special police that arrested and

The «Estado Novo» is the name of the


authoritarian political regime which was
established in Portugal during 41 years from
1933 until 1974. It’s leader and founder was
António de Oliveira Salazar.

The Portuguese World Exhibition was the


largest exhibition in Portugal. Its aim was to
celebrate both the centennial dates of the
Foundation of Portugal in 1140 and the
Restoration of Independence in 1640.

The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation was


established with the legacy of Calouste
Gulbenkian. After his death in 1955, his
assets were donated to the country to create
a foundation. It supports many cultural

Chinese authorities in 1999.
