Objectives

Use Ziegler-Nichols, Cohen-Coon, and time integral tuning methods to determine controller parameters

Background
A strong controller is one that can respond quickly to a disturbance while limiting the oscillation and overshoot. One such controller is the PID controller, which takes into account current error (P), past error (I), and predicted error (D). Optimal tuning parameters can be determined through methods such as Ziegler-Nichols, Cohen-Coon, and ITAE. A reaction curve can be used to find the gain (K), time delay (), and time constant ()

Key Teaching Points

A properly tuned PID controller can eliminate offset and minimize oscillation. Different tuning methods yield different parameters. The optimal solution can be inferred by running the dynamic simulation and observing how the process behaves.

Problem Statement
The system consists of two tanks, with the liquid outlet from the first flowing into the second. The first tank has hot and cold water streams flowing in Inspection of a reaction curve yields the following parameters
