photosynthesis process. (3)state the structure of leaf for adaptation to photosynthesis. (4)identify the parts of cross section of leaf.

Have you ever think Where do plants get the energy they need to grow?

Do they eat??? Do they drink???

Photosynthesis is the process by which plants use energy from the sun to transform carbon dioxide and water into a storable form of energy, glucose.

Plants use some of their own stored energy to support their life processes such as growth and reproduction.

Animals take energy that plants store in their tissues. Animals and humans, rely on the carbohydrates found in plant roots, stems, leaves, and fruits as their primary source of energy.

The starting point for this transfer of energy is photosynthesis. This is why plants are called producers.

Stomata

Upper and lower epidermis

Vascular tissue

Palisade mesophyll

Intercellular air space

Spongy mesophyll

Flattened leaf has large surface to receive more light

Shape
Thin leaf for light to reach lower layers and for diffusion of gases

Found below the upper epidermis

Palisade mesophyll

The cells are columnshaped and contain many chloroplast

They are closely packed together vertically to receive maximum sunlight

v
Consists of one layer without chloroplasts

Upper and lower epidermis

Thin and transparent to allow sunlight to reach the mesophyll Cover with waxy cuticle which is impermeable to water. It prevent excessive loss of water and entry of pathogens.

v
Irregular shape to increase surface are for gas changes

Spongy mesophyll

Cells are loosely packed with large air space

Cells are surrounded with thin film of water to facilitate gaseous diffusion

Intercellular air space

The cellular air-space permit an uninterrupted exchange of gases between leaf and the atmosphere

v
Each stomata consist of a stomatal pore enclosed by a pair of guard cell containing chloroplast

Stomata

Stomata is site of gas exchange between leaf and surroundings. During day, carbon dioxide diffuse into leaf for photosynthesis and oxygen diffuse out. The guard cell regulate the size of stomatal pore

v
Fine network of veins in the leaf

Vascular tissue

Xylem transport water and mineral ions to the leaf

Phloem transport organic molecule produced by photosynthesis from leaf to other part of plant.
