A study on Project Management approaches that contribute to the success of project in the Electronics Manufacturing Industries in Penang, Malaysia

Problem Statement
It is impossible to come out with a framework that can help EMS in Malaysia to ensure higher level of success rate in project management without knowing what are the factors that contribute to the success of the project. Without this framework, EMS has to leave their success in project management to random factors which they cannot manage and increase the risk of their investment in any project undertakings.

Research Objectives
1. To determine the contribution of the 9 knowledge areas stated by Project Management Body of Knowledge within EMS in Penang, Malaysia. 2. To determine which of the knowledge areas has the highest influence in the success of project within EMS in Penang, Malaysia. 3. To determine the importance of the 5 process groups as stipulated by Project Management Body of Knowledge in the success of the project within EMS in Penang, Malaysia.

Research Questions
Q1: Is

there a significant contribution from the 9 knowledge areas as stated by Project Management Body of Knowledge towards the success of project management within the EMS industry in Penang, Malaysia?

Q2: Which of the knowledge areas has the highest influence towards the success of project management within the EMS industry in Penang, Malaysia? Q3: Is there a significant contribution from the 5 process group as stipulated by Project Management Body of Knowledge towards the success of project management within the EMS industry in Penang, Malaysia?

Research Design
a. a quantitative approach Using a descriptive research methodology Use a questionnaire survey instrument snowball sampling method is used Data collected from 100 respondents and analysed Questionnaire divided into 3 parts part 1- 18 questions to determine the contribution of the nine knowledge areas stated by Project Management Body of Knowledge b. Part 2 -9 questions to determine which of the knowledge areas possess the highest influence in determining the success of a project in EMS c. Part 3 -18 questions to determine the importance of the 5 process group stipulated by Project Management Body of Knowledge in the success of the project management in EMS

Q1: Is there a significant contribution from the 9 knowledge areas as stated by Project Management Body of Knowledge towards the success of project management within the EMS industry in Penang, Malaysia? All 9 key knowledge areas as stated by Project Management Body of Knowledge have significant contributions. Project quality and cost management have very strong positive contribution. Project integration, scope, human resource management, communication, procurement, time and risk management have strong positive contribution based on Pearsons Correlation Test.

Q3: Is there a significant contribution from the 5 process group as stipulated by Project Management Body of Knowledge towards the success of project management within the electronic manufacturing industry in Penang, Malaysia? Based on Pearsons Correlation Test The 5 process group have very strong positive importance on project quality and cost management. The 5 process group has strong positive importance on project integration, scope management, human resource management, project communication, project procurement and time management.

*Cluster
sampling method is recommended to replace snowball sampling used in this study. This is to get a more evenly distributed and better representation of respondents according to the variables in demographic factors such as age groups, departments, managerial expertise and education level.

*The scope of the study can be expanded by focusing not only on


the contribution of knowledge areas within the electronic manufacturing industry but other industries through comparisonoriented approach. By including the aspect of project management in other industries, the contribution of the key knowledge areas and process groups can be assessed in a wider scope and its potential in achieving project management success can be optimised.
