FOCUS AREA

EDUCATING FOR SUSTAINABILITY

Today we live in a globally interconnected world in which biological, psychological, social and environmental phenomena are all interdependent. To describe this world appropriately we need a new paradigm, a new vision of reality a fundamental change in our thoughts, perceptions and values. The beginnings of this change, or the shift from the mechanistic to the holistic conception of reality, are already visibleThe gravity and global extent of our crisis indicates that the current changes are likely to result in a transformation of unprecedented dimension, a turning point for the planet as a whole Fritjof Capra, 1982 Our definition of Sustainable Development is an extension of two Essential Learning Themes: Sustainable Development is the means by which society maintains a harmonious relationship with nature and fosters a value system which ensures living within the carrying capacity of all ecosystems. Sustainable Development is also the means by which society recognizes diverse cultures and economies in developing technologies which use resources sustainably and promotes a fair and reasonable quality of life for all people. - See more at: http://drivechange.in/sustainability/#sthash.6jlLsda4.dpuf

ENERGY PLAN & CONSERVE

Energy Planning We have realized that the demand and supply of energy reflect and interact with changes in society. And we have experienced that while decision-makers are struggling with different, often conflicting strategies, it is necessary to professionalize the way problems and options are analyzed. The complex relationship between the demand and supply for energy, democracy and its institutions, economy, and environment, are all part of the process of planning and managing a cost-effective sustainable development. - See more at: http://drivechange.in/energymanagment/#sthash.Tez7YNKE.dpuf

TEACHER DEVELOPMENT

Educators have some of the toughest jobs on the planetand we know it. Our job is to find ways to make their jobs easier.

Teaching quality has been defined as instruction that enables a wide range of students to learn (Darling-Hammond, 2012), and it is the strongest school-related factor that can improve student learning and achievement. The crisis confronting teacher education is that, across the country, teachers are mired in methods that isolate education from the arts and sciences, segregate the theory and practice of teaching, and provide insufficient time and support for future teachers to learn to work in real classrooms. Far too many universities, for their part, run education programs on the cheap.
The delinquency in teacher preparation is nothing new, of course but its growing more dire as we ask teachers to perform increasingly challenging tasks: to teach more complex skills to high and measurable standards, and to ensure that every child in an incredibly diverse generation learns these skills equally well. The three Rs are not enough any more. The challenge now is to figure out how to to close the gap between the way we prepare teachers and the way teachers actually teach in the classroom. - See more at: http://drivechange.in/teacher-development/#sthash.gx4x4343.dpuf
