The universe story
• The cosmos is a self-generating, essentially creative process
which emerges through differentiation, autopoiesis, and
communion.(Swimme; 1984; Berry; 1988)
• We live with the universe
• Phases of human consciousness (Reason, 1996/ Barfield,
1957):
– 1st phase: human consciousness is undifferentiated from the
natural world and people live in deep unconscious communion
with their surrounding (original participation)
– 2nd phase: human beings progressively differentiate
themselves from their environment, participation is denied;
people live in alienated consciousness (loss of participation)
– 3rd phase: human beings participate intentionally and awarely
in the creation of the world (final participation)

The learner: unconscious thought and knowledge.
• If we assume that learning is largely unconscious we turn
the classroom inside out and upside down:
– give students what they like, not just what is considered good for
them
– move desks from rows to clusters
– allow constant movement and interaction, and much more self-
direction
– reduce testing, prescribing, telling, correcting, even praising
– add creative/artistic/musical activity,
– gives incubation time for unconscious learning work in progress,
and above all, engages the bottom-up processes of organic
unfoldment.
