MATERIALS ANALYSIS

The long term goals in learning language are for the pupils to be able to communicate effectively and for the pupils to develop all four language skills. The activities provided in the material are suitable to develop the four skills among the pupils. There are communicative activities in the material that will be able to help the learners to equip themselves with good communication skills and use it in a variety of contexts.

50/50 For pupils in urban areas, it will be quite easy for them as they are exposed to the language itself, however, for those in rural areas, it might be quite difficult for them as they have less exposure to the language. The language used in the material consists of simple language at the beginning(which the pupils might have already known) and quite a number of challenging words towards the end.

The activities are planned in the way to suit the skills stated in the book. Thus, most of the activities will be able to meet the requirements for each lesson. Besides that, the to ensure that the pupils understand the new words/keywords, pictures are provided for each word. For example, pg 5, flowers, cards, wristbands, teddy bears

The topics, themes, and ideas are related to the pupils daily life. It is relevant as the pupils can relate it to themselves. For example, World of Self-I am special, Hobbies, When I grow up. It is also deemed to be interesting for the learners as there are stories included in the book. Exp:Caring and Sharing-Dolly the Hungry Doe

Moral values are incorporated in each chapter. Exp: Unit2 do and donts, 4 cooperation, 10 quality of a good friend. The pupils will feel more indulged in the learning as it has hands-on activities. The lesson will also be more enjoyable to the pupils.

The book highlights the four skills-listening, speaking, reading, writing, the language content-sound system(phonemic awareness) and also language arts. The pupils are given opportunities to develop all the skills as the activities are planned to suit the need for each skill.

For KSSR, the time allocated for one week is 8-10 periods, depending on the school. Thus, each skill will be taught for 2 periods. It is flexible and depends on the teacher whether to use more or less time to teach the skill.

Some of the activities provided in the book require the pupils to utilise their previous knowledge to complete. The pupils can also be more creative while doing the activities. Exp: pg 106 Creative Money Box

The activities involves communicative skills, question and answer, approaches-whole class and small group. The group activities foster the pupils to communicate with each other effectively.

For the learners to interpret and comprehend the meaning, the time used depends on the learners. For expressing the meaning, most of the activities requires the learners to sing, chant, read aloud, write and do. Thus, the time devoted is quite long.

Each unit includes hands-on activities for the learners to use the skill or ability learned. Besides that, the activities are suitable to the developmental stage of the pupils. For example, learning how to know a new friend, when they are at a stage to know more friends.

31 The content is sequenced according to units. In each unit, the contents are arranged according to skills. From Listening speakingphonemic awareness-reading-writinglanguage arts.

The units are arranged according to the level of difficulty. It progresses from easy to hard level. Besides, it is also arranged in three themesWorld of self, stories, knowledge, but in a jumbled up form.

The material has continuity. For example, the pupils learn about phonemic awareness and use the sound they have learnt to read aloud the text for reading. Language art is to wrap up the whole lesson.

The pupils do not really have the chance to sequence, divide or modify the material as they do not have the ability to do so.
