BODY PROPORTION
BODY SHAPE:
ANALYSING YOUR BODY SHAPE
 Stand in front of a mirror wearing a leotard or
other tight-fitting clothes
1. Take a lipstick and tie your hair to the back
2. Ignore any lumps and bumps you may see!
3. Trace your body outline from top to bottom

 This is the best way to establish your real

body shape
BODY SHAPE
THE RIGHT FABRIC TEXTURE, COLOUR
AND MOTIFS FOR YOU
 Fabric Texture
 For petite frames, you can get away with shiny
and/or lightweight fabrics like satin, silk,
velvet, chiffon and linen. Stay away from
heavy fabrics that will weigh you down, such as
corduroy and leather. Stretch cotton and
lightweight denim can be your fabric of choice
when going casual.
 For larger frames, you should stay away from
shiny fabrics that will only make you appear
larger. Stick to matte-finish fabrics. Thai silk
that is both shiny and rigid is very unflattering on
a fuller figure. However, 1- or 2-ply Thai silk is
less shiny and can be worn. Fabrics that fall
onto your body but are not too clingy like
chiffon, knitwear and jersey, are appropriate for
those with larger frames.
COLOUR
 Bright Colors: Bright colors tend to be overwhelming
for smaller bodies unless it is used sparingly. Bright
colors should never make up your whole outfit
regardless of your size – always pair a bright color
with a neutral color. Examples: RED,YELLOW,
FUCHSIA
 Pastel Colors: Pastel colors look sweet on smaller
bodies but can make a larger person appear bigger.
Examples: PINK, LAVENDER, PEACH
 Dark Colors: Dark colors are said to be slimming, but
wearing too much of it will make you look sombre. Use
a bright accessory as a highlight to a dark outfit.
Examples: NAVY BLUE, BLACK, DARK GREY
 Neutral Colors: Most neutral colors suit all body
types. An exception is the color white, which can be
unflattering on a larger frame. For larger frames,
beige or off-white is a great color option. Examples:
WHITE, BEIGE, GRAY, BLACK
MOTIFS
 Larger frames cannot carry off motifs that
are too small or too big. Smaller frames can
carry off most motifs.
 Despite popular belief, larger frames can
wear geometric prints as long as the size of
the print is not too big.
 In regard to stripes, larger frames CAN wear
horizontal stripes as long as it is not too bold.
Medium-sized stripes would suit you best.
Diagonal stripes can also add curves to a
less-curvy body. Smaller frames tend to look
smaller when wearing large stripes.
This geometric print is suitable This flower motif and flowing
for those with a larger frame fabric is suitable for tall
women with broad shoulders
and hips
The stripes accent on this
outfit will suit a larger-framed
women perfectly.
Small frames can carry off the There is a lot of bright
medium-sized motifs and soft white in this outfit, which
ruffles of this outfit. smaller frames can carry
off.
DRESSING FOR THE
OCCASION

•Social Surroundings
LIFESTYLE
 Are you a working parent, Work
single professional, a
student or a homemaker?
Dressing appropriately for
your lifestyle will allow
you to reflect a successful
image.
 For example, it would be
more appropriate for a
homemaker to dress in
comfortable blouse and
pants rather than a short
dress and high heels. A
student would portray a
better image if dressed in
a smart casual attire
rather than torn jeans
and an old t-shirt.
Shopping  The activities that you
participate in daily will
dictate what you
should wear. A working
professional should
wear a sharp suit or
baju kurung because
he or she might have
to meet a lot of clients
daily and would want
to portray a
professional image.
However, a stay-at-
home mum wouldn’t
feel as comfortable in
that kind of attire
when chasing after the
kids and finishing the
household chores.
EVENTS

 Cocktail / Hi-Tea
A smart casual look would be
most appropriate for this kind of
event.
 This includes a simple baju
kurung or kebaya or a simple
dress without too much
embellishments. For men, a
smart collared shirt and tailored
pants is best.
 Formal Evening Function
 A formal look would be best.
 Clothes with a lot of
embellishments and more
ornate accessories would be
appropriate for this kind of
event. In our country,
traditional clothes is a safe
bet regardless of your race.
 Be sure to check the dress
code for the occasion – some
hosts are very specific on
the theme for the night and
as their guest, you are
expected to oblige as best
you can.
 Jeans are absolutely
forbidden for this kind of
event!
 Weddings
 Regardless of the race(s)
of the couple involved, it
is best to wear your
traditional clothes when
attending a wedding.
 If you choose not to
wear traditional clothes,
your outfit should be
similar to what you
would wear for a formal
evening function.
 Out of respect for the
couple and their
families, refrain from
wearing outfits that are
too revealing.
 Again, jeans are not
appropriate for this kind
of formal occasion.
 Conferences and
Seminars
 You should wear
professional clothes or
traditional attire when
attending conferences and
seminars. Remember, you
are acting a
representative of your
company and should
always dress as such.
 Some exceptions include
personal enrichment
seminars such as
motivational talks, fashion
seminars and the like. In
this case, a smart casual
look based on your
individual taste would be
best. No jeans!
 Open house and house
parties
 An open house for a
specific occasional such
as Eid Ul-Fitr, Chinese
New Year, Deepavali or
Christmas allows for both
formal and smart-casual
attire, depending on your
host. If you are unsure, it
is always best to call
ahead and ask.
 A house party such as a
bridal shower, baby
shower or birthday party
allows for more casual
wear. In some cases, this
even includes jeans.
Again, sometimes the
host has a specific dress
code in mind, so call
ahead if you are unsure.
SOCIAL SURROUNDINGS
 The image you would want to portray will be
different based on the people that will surround
you.
 If you are going to royal function or an event
hosted by high-ranking socialite (Tan Sris, Puan
Sris, Dato’s and Datins), pick an outfit that is not
too casual.
 By contrast, if you are attending a barbecue
lunch with friends, don’t wear a glittery ballgown.
A more casual laid-back look would be
appropriate.
 Remember, you want to fit in with the crowd, but
you don’t want to fade into the background
either. Make sure you wear what is both
comfortable for you and appropriate to those that
surround you for that specific occasion.
AGE
 Your body changes as you age. What may be
appropriate at one point in your life may not
be appropriate anymore.
 That is not to say that you should dress in a
dull, old-fashioned manner as you get older.
You should just dress age-appropriately. It is
totally possible to be stylish no matter how
old you are, but sometimes there are parts of
our body that betrays our age too much to be
exposed. Remember, style is about
highlighting your best features and
downplaying your worst features.
 One example would be wrinkly, flabby arms.
After a certain age, this area loses elasticity,
and one should not wear sleeveless outfits as
this just highlights the unflattering feature.
However, you can always cover up with a
stylish pashmina or shawl. This would
actually act as a stylish accessory for your
outfit.
 Another example is flabby love-handles (the
sides of your torso). As we age, our body
tends to retain fat around this area, and
certain outfits will bring unwanted attention
to this area, like a close-fitting kebaya or a
tight dress. Wearing a pesak-gantung kebaya
or tailoring your dress to fit you well would
be a better idea.
CHOOSING ACCESSORIES
CHOOSING ACCESSORIES
 A basic rule to choosing any accessory,
especially those near your face, is to
accentuate your features.
 For example, a curved outline face would be
flattered by curvy accessories such as hoop
earrings, round diamond stud earrings,
pendants with curvy motifs and curved
spectacle frames.
 By contrast, faces with an angular outline
would look best with angular-shaped
accessories.
 Also, remember to choose accessories based
on your outfit and the event you are
SCARVES
 For a face with a curved outline, the motifs
on the scarf should be curvy.
SCARVES

 For a face with an angular

outline, angular and
geometric motifs would
suit you best.
HANDBAGS
 Handbags are a must-have for most women.
Your handbag should be both functional and
attractive.
 Do not get too caught up in getting the
latest trendy style. You would do better by
choosing classic styles and colors, especially
when buying a handbag for work.
 Statement handbags in bright colors and
bold motifs should be reserved for casual
attire.
 Evening bags should be small but fit the
necessary items like compact powder,
lipgloss and your handphone.

SHOES
 Shoes are the most taken-forgranted
accessory in a person’s wardrobe. Often,
people will think that one shoe will fit all
occasions. This is not true!
 A woman needs different shoes for work,
formal wear and casual wear.
 Remember the rules in the
EVENING
Proportions topic! Find a shoe that
suits your body proportions.

JEWELLERY
 As with other accessories, your
jewellery should complement your
face and body shape as well as
your attire and the occasion.
 A formal occasion calls for more
formal and elaborate jewellery,
whereas casual occasions and
outings call for simpler jewellery.
 An exception to the angular and
curved rule is pearl jewelry, which
is a timeless classic regardless of
your face or body shape. Just be
sure to pick the appropriate size for
your body frame (small pearls for a
small body, and vice versa)

INTRODUCTION
 Whether we like it or not, our face is the focal
point of our appearance.
 Whether you wear a scarf or not, your face
shape plays an important role in your overall
appearance. Your ideal hairstyle and your
ideal accessories like the scarf, glasses,
earrings, etc., all depend on your face shape.
 Did you know that your face changes with
age? Ten years ago, you might have a small,
long face, but maybe now your face is a little
plumper and rounded out. That is why it is
important to find the right color and tying
technique to suit what your face looks like
now.
ANALYSING YOUR FACE SHAPE
 Stand in front of a mirror:
1. Take a lipstick
2. Stand in front of the mirror with no
makeup on
3. Close one eye
4. Trace the outline of your face
starting from your hairline to your
chin
FACE SHAPES
CURVED AND ANGULAR FACE SHAPES
 Aswith body shapes, faces can be
categorized into two main types:
1. Curved Outline
2. Angular Outline
CURVED FACE SHAPE
 Oval Shape: Your forehead may be wider
than other parts of your face such as your
cheeks. Your jaws and chin are quite small.
 Round Shape: Your face is generally wide
and short. You have full cheeks that
continues on into your chin.
 Heart Shape: The widest point of your face
is your forehead. It then curves down into a
much smaller cheek and a sharp chin.
 Pear Shape: You have a narrow forehead
and wide jaw. Your cheeks are curved and are
quite rounded.
ANGULAR FACE SHAPE
 Square Shape: Your face is as wide as it is
long, and you have a very pronounced and
angular jaw.
 Rectangle Shape: Your face is longer than it
is wide, but you also have a very pronounced
and angular jaw.
 Diamond Shape: Your forehead and chin are
narrow, but you have high cheekbones.

STYLING OF SCARVES
 When choosing a scarf, you must always take
into consideration the print/motif, color and
tying technique.
 Even if you’re wearing a scarf or outfit that
may not be one-of-a-kind, the way you tie
your scarf or the color that you choose will
make you unique.
 What you choose to frame your face is one
the best ways to express your unique
personality.
CHOOSING THE BEST TYING
TECHNIQUE FOR YOUR FACE SHAPE
 Oval Shape: Any style will suit your face
shape.
 Round Shape: The style must be able to
elongate your face and downplay your
cheeks.
 Heart Shape: Creating a “fringe” with the
top of your scarf will mask the wideness of
your forehead.
 Pear Shape: Bring the sides of your scarf in
toward the face just a little to soften the
appearance of your wide jaw.
CHOOSING THE BEST TYING
TECHNIQUE FOR YOUR FACE SHAPE
 Square Shape: Your scarf tying style must
be simple. A full and heavy “fringe” is a no-
no as your face is already quite short.
 Rectangle Shape: Creating a “fringe” with
the top of your scarf with make your face
appear less long.
 Diamond Shape: Your prominent
cheekbones are your best asset. Your narrow
forehead and pointed chin will be suitable
with any style.
