Interactive media is the integration of digital media including combinations of electronic text, graphics, moving images, and sound, into a structured digital computerised environment that allows people to interact with the data for appropriate purposes. The digital environment can include the Internet, telecoms and interactive digital television. The important concepts to hold on to are interactive and media across a range of delivery channels or platforms.

Functions of IM
As a drill or exercise to master basic skills To develop the writing skill Use in problem solving Increase the understanding of the concepts of mathematics and science For data manipulation To master the computer skills To access and communicate As remote access by teachers and students For individual and cooperative learning For administration and management of classroom activity

Development of Multimedia Interactive Learning Package

Involves a systematic and thorough process Model used: ADDIE Analysis Design Development Implementation Evaluation

Analysis phase
i. Analyse your pupils (make assumptions about the condition of your students) ii. Think about the students attitude, existing knowledge, skills and learning styles iii. Analyse the syllabus, topic or sub-topic for the T&L aids that will be constructed iv. Examine the structure of the titles concept v. Think the sequence should be mastered by students vi. Think the support materials needed vii. Think the materials (media) can be built or found according to the major content and support materials viii. Ensure the learning outcomes of the subjects is comply with curriculum and based on students abilities ix. Discuss the way of learning suppose to be conducted x. Think the appropriate activities and assignments to develop a meaningful, fun, relevant learning to achieve the learning outcomes

Design Phase
i. Consider the aspects of design, contents, arrangement/layout for the display and interface ii. Build the navigation plan iii. Build the storyboard iv. Defining the interactivity level

Development Phase
i. ii. iii. Find and select the appropriate materials/media Modify the existing media if necessary Build your own media including appropriate audio, graphics, animation video, etc. iv. Use appropriate software to edit graphics; audio, video, animation v. Convert all media materials into digital form vi. Choose an appropriate authoring tool vii. Based on the storyboard, compose it using selected authoring software. viii. Input the multimedia element you had fixed ix. Build a menu to access the topics, activities, training and resources x. Create a link from title, activities, assignments, training, and other resources; link back to the menu

Implementation Phase
i. ii. Run the multimedia packages that have been developed to find bugs. This test level is called as Alpha Testing Apply your multimedia package to your students and correct the bugs. This test level is called Beta Testing

Evaluation Phase
i. ii. Conduct an assessment regarding the effectiveness of the media prepared Conduct an assessment regarding the T&L process you have planned

Interactivity Design
Consists of 6 major components (Shedroff, 1994)
i. ii. iii. iv. v. vi. Feedback (user performance response) Control (navigation and interactivity) Creativity (users develop something) Productivity (content) Communication (communication with others) Easily adapted

Advantages of using IM
i. Facilitate the student-centered learning. It provides many options for learning and introducing a lot of new material ii. Fulfil the requirements of a variety learning styles to provide a large selection of learning approaches iii. Motivate interaction, experimentation and students cooperative learning iv. Help the learning process based on the theme v. Enhance the constructivist learning

Suitable to be used in complex learning situations such as: i. Material or content that is difficult to visualize such as complex processes ii. The learning of 3 dimensional content which is usually difficult to view in 2D iii. Dynamic processes that require an understanding of the relationship between moving objects iv. Comprehensive content ; some ideas need to be combined to understand the entire content v. Simulation of a complex or expensive process in which no opportunity to use real equipment

IMPORTANT ELEMENTS
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Animated Narratives Audio & Video Discussion Environments Games Illustrated Essays Interactive Images Interactive Maps Interactive Simulations Interactive Timelines

Animated Narratives
These graphic features reveal information progressively or along a user-determined path. can be used for storytelling or to explain a phenomenon graphically. employ plug-ins such as Flash.

Audio & Video

can make audio and video clips available on the Web using plug-ins such as RealPlayer, QuickTime, or Windows Media. audio files are smaller in size than video, so it may be possible to use audio with still images to save on bandwidth. Since these files take a while to download, they may only be useful to users with higherbandwidth Web connections, such as cable modems or DSL.

Discussion Environments
provide a sense of community for Web users. some cases, users can share their submissions with the larger audience, but this requires moderation on your part. It's also possible to simulate submissions for non-moderated use.

Games
These features are fun, and there may be a way to "win," even though an educational agenda may be lurking within!

Illustrated Essays
These "standard" Web pages of HTML text and graphics can serve as an effective way to get information across, as long as text is properly "chunked" to make the content digestible to users. Various graphic layout options can add interest. They are the least expensive type of Web page to produce.

Interactive Images
These graphic features let users roll their cursor over or click on an image to provide greater text or graphic detail, or panoramic views. They may require a plug-in such as Flash or QuickTimeVR.

Interactive Maps
A map is a visual representation of an area-a symbolic depiction highlighting relationships between elements of that space such as objects, regions, and themes.

Interactive Simulation
A special kind of physical simulation, often referred to as a human in the loop simulation, in which physical simulations include human operators, such as in a flight simulator or a driving simulator

Interactive Timeline
a linear representation of important events in the order in which they occurred.
