As engineers it makes us think do they have
any truth? Is there any way in which we can
make this Science Fiction a science reality? Is
there any means that can help us achieve our
dream?
So lets know about this technology.
Sir Richard
Feynman
In his lecture called "There's
plenty of Room at the
Bottom” talked about
developing the ability to
manipulate individual atoms
and molecules to develop
precise tools at the needed
scale, thus giving rise to
conceptual underpinnings of
Nanotechnology in 1959.
K. Eric
Drexler
In 1986, K. Eric Drexler
wrote "Engines of
Creation" and introduced
the term
nanotechnology as
design, characterization,
production and
application of structures,
devices and systems by
controlling shape and size
at nanometer scale.
Principal factors which
causing the property of
Nano-materials to differ are
Increased relative surface area.
Quantum effect.
STEEL BAR FAILURE OF STEEL BAR
Nano-Wires and
Carbon Nano-
tubes
•With the right arrangement
of atoms, you can create a
carbon Nano-tube.
• It is hundreds of times
stronger than steel, but six
times lighter [source: The
Ecologist].
• Engineers plan to make
building material out of
carbon Nano-tubes,
particularly for things like
cars and airplanes.
•Lighter vehicles would mean
better fuel efficiency, and the
added strength translates to
increased passenger safety.
Nano-
Composites
An important use of Nano-
particles and Nano-tubes
is in composites,
materials that combine
one or more separate
components and which
are designed to exhibit
overall the best properties
of each component. A
particular type of Nano-
composite is where Nano-
particles act as fillers in a
matrix; for example,
carbon black used as a
filler to reinforce car
tyres.
Coatings and
Surfaces
•Coatings with thickness
controlled at the Nano or
atomic scale have been in
routine production for some
time.
•Recently developed
applications include the self-
cleaning window, which is
coated in highly activated
titanium dioxide, engineered
to be highly hydrophobic
(water repellent).
• Wear and scratch-resistant
hard coatings are significantly
improved by Nano-scale
intermediate layers between
the hard outer layer and the
substrate material.
Lubricants
•Nano-spheres of inorganic
materials could be used as
lubricants, in essence by
acting as Nano-sized ‘ball
bearings’.
•The controlled shape is
claimed to make them more
durable than conventional
solid lubricants and wear
additives.
•It is also claimed that these
Nano-particles reduce friction
between metal surfaces,
particularly at high normal
loads or even if the metal
surfaces are not highly
smooth
Military Battle
Suits
•Latest army technology uses
a fluid called Shear thickening
fluid in their body armors.
• This fluid thickens when
sudden load is applied to it.
•This fluid helps the body
armor to absorb more impact
and does not allow the fabric
to stretch more thus stopping
bullet from penetrating.
•The common example of
such a fluid is our CORN-
FLOUR Paste, it also shows
shear thickening property to
some extent.
There are basically two types of nano-
manufacturing
Bottoms up
Top down
Need to learn more about materials and their
properties at the Nano-scale.
Quantum mechanics.
Electron tunneling.
Less Knowledge of Properties at Nano-Scale.
Assemblers and
Replicators
Construct complex
product
automatically.
Replace traditional
labors.
Eventually replicate
diamonds, water and
food.
Nano-robots
Repairing of ozone
layers.
Cleaning up of seas
in case of oil spills.
Repair cancerous
cells.
Making invisibility
possible.
Nanotechnology
could make the
dream of invisibility
possible.
Health
Hazard’s.
Nano-Materials
could be toxic
Being very small
they can pass
the blood brain
barrier.
Many
Nonmaterial's
could cause
ailments like
Lung fibroses.
Horrifying future
Eric Drexler, presented a
frightening apocalyptic
vision.
Grey Goo scenario
Green Goo scenario
Weapons of mass
