What was a settlement?

The three settlements that we are going to be discussing today were made up of three groups of English people who traveled to America to create small communities. These small communities were also known as settlements.

Roanoke Part I
Best known as The Lost Colony.

Sir Walter Raleigh sent two ships to North America in hopes of making his country richer. The ships landed on an island which is known presently as North Carolina.
The sailors named the colony Roanoke after the Native Americans who lived there.

Roanoke Part II
What did the sailors find in Roanoke? They claimed they found fish, fruit, vegetables and friendly people.

Another ship of settlers were sent out, but were unable to be successful and their supplies ran short. They were unable to farm food so they gave up and returned to England.

Roanoke Part III

The final 115 set of settlers to go to Roanoke. When they couldnt trade with the natives for food they sent Captain White back to England for supplies. For many reasons the captain was unable to return for THREE YEARS.

When he finally returned he couldnt find any sign of the Roanoke colony. The only clue to what happened to the settlers was the word CROATOAN carved into a gatepost.

Jamestown Part I
April 1607, 105 settlers arrived in Virginia and named the colony Jamestown after their king, King James. Since the colony was built on a marsh ( a low area of wetland) it created an unhealthy environment for the settlers. Many of them became sick and by January 1608 there were only 38 settlers left.

Jamestown Part II
The colony survived by Captain John Smith forcing all his remaining people to work. If the people didnt help contribute to the colony they did not eat. This saved the colony and the colony formed a relationship with the local Native American group.

Jamestown Part III

Tobacco was a crop that John Rolf found to sell to England. This crop saved the future of the colony. In 1619 Jamestown grew with the addition of 200 women and each settler was given 50 acres of land.

Fun fact! John Rolf was the one who married Pocahontas not John Smith.

Plymouth
Reason for the creation of Plymouth was for religious freedom. A group called the Separatists sailed on the Mayflower. The landed on what is known today as Cape Cod Massachusetts.

Native Americans in Plymouth

Squanto belonged to the Wampanoag and helped the Pilgrims plant corn, catch fish, and get sweet syrup from maple trees. He tried to tell the Pilgrims that they got his whole tribe sick with a disease they brought over, but he eventually lost his whole tribe.

Massasoit
Another Native American who was chief of the Wampanoags. He had Squanto make a peace treaty between the tribe and the Pilgrims.

The first Thanksgiving

The Pilgrims corn ripened in summer and they decided to celebrate in fall. The Wampanoags brought deer meet and the Pilgrims had goose, wild turkey, lobster, and corn bread. The feast lasted for three days!

Activity time!
Imagine youre were a Pilgrim!

What are three things you would have needed on the journey to America?
What are three things you would need to survive as a settler once youve landed? Once youve completed the two questions wait to be placed into a group to discuss the similarities and differences in your answers.
