So What do we mean by Habits of Mind?


A habit is an acquired disposition to respond in particular ways when we dont have a solution. A combination of having the inclination, capability and commitment to particular behaviors that lead to productive outcomes.

Persist

Manage impulsivity
Listen with understanding and empathy

Think and communicate with clarity and precision Gather data through all senses Create, imagine, and innovate Respond with wonderment and awe Take responsible risks Find humor Think interdependently Remain open to continuous learning

Think about your thinking (Metacognition) Strive for accuracy Question and pose problems Apply past knowledge to new situations

Habits of Mind Framework


Persist - Persevering in a task to completion and not giving up. Manage impulsivity - Taking time to deliberate before acting. Listen with understanding and empathy - Making the effort to perceive another persons perspective. Think flexibly - Considering options and changing perspectives.

Think about your thinking (Metacognition) Being aware of how thoughts, feelings and actions affect self and others. Strive for accuracy Setting high standards and finding ways to improve. Question and pose problems Finding problems to solve, seeking data and answers. Apply past knowledge to new situations Accessing prior knowledge and intentionally applying it to new situations.

Think and communicate with clarity and precision Striving for accuracy in oral and written communications. Gather data through all senses Paying attention to the world around you through taste, touch, smell, hearing and sight. Create, imagine, and innovate Generating new and novel ideas. Take responsible risks Living on the edge of ones competence. Find humor Enjoying the incongruous and unexpected. Being able to laugh at oneself. Think interdependently Being able to work and learn as a team. Remain open to continuous learning Resisting complacency and admitting when one does not know.

Intelligence and Success
