Geo Thermal Earth Heat

A geothermal reservoir is a powerful source of energy!

Geothermal reservoirs can reach temperatures of 370 C. (more than 3 times boiling).

Generation Of Electricity

Dry Steam Power Plants

The steam goes directly to a turbine, which drives a generator that produces electricity. This is the oldest type of geothermal power plant. The steam eliminates the need to burn fossil fuels to run the turbine.

Today after 90 years, the Lardello field is still producing

Flash Steam Powerplants

It utilizes hydrothermal fluids above 400 degrees F that can be used in flash plants to make electricity. Fluid is sprayed into a tank held at a much lower pressure than the fluid, causing some of the fluid to rapidly vaporize, or "flash," to steam. The steam eliminates the need to burn fossil fuels to run the turbine.

Binary Cycle Power Plant

Hot geothermal fluid and a secondary fluid with a much lower boiling point than water pass through a heat exchanger. Heat from the geothermal fluid causes the secondary fluid to flash to steam, which then drives the turbines. Most geothermal power plants in the future will be binary-cycle plants.

Those white plumes you see at geothermal power plants are steam (water vapor). Geothermal plants do not burn fuel or produce smoke.

Easy on Environment

People who live in these areas are receiving electricity from geothermal power plants. There are around 24 countries using geothermal energy to
produce electricity. Prominent names are USA, Philippines, Mexico, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Iceland, Costa Rica, Kenya, EI Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Turkey and France. Among them USA has the highest production of 17917 GWh/year. Countries like Philippines with 18.8%, Iceland 17.5% and EI Salvador 22% having the most prominent percentage of geothermal power in their total energy production. There are EGS systems currently being developed and tested in France, Australia, Japan, Germany, USA and Switzerland. There are several EGS projects that are already or will soon produce power.

Costs

The significant costs associated with an EGS project are: Drilling cost. Reservoir stimulation. Power plant. Transmission and other regulatory costs.
Wells in the depth ranges from 1,500 m to 10,000 m were modeled in three categories: shallow wells (1,500-3,000 m), midrange wells (4,000-5,000 m), and deep wells (6,000-10,000 m). Well costs were estimated for depths from 1,500 m to 10,000 m.

EGS is receiving attention in the world stage because of its lower operation and maintenance cost, environmental cleanliness and relatively lower cost of the energy produced.

Geothermal Heat Pumps

(GeoExchange systems)

Geothermal heat pumps can be used almost everywhere in the world, without a geothermal reservoir. The insulating properties of the earth, just below our feet, can keep us warm or cool. In a poll, over 95% of people who had installed a geothermal heat pump said they would recommend it and would do it again.
