The Importance of Values and Ethics

in Sustainability

axiom

Values and ethics are the foundation of sustainability

At the constellation of environmental ethics' center is the development of knowledge that leads to a higher quality of mind and being.

Explore the concept of "living buildings (complete self-sustaining), and their relationship to the quality of life.

European architecture and world experience shows how architects have decoded the concept of sustainability in architecture

BEDZED
Beddington Zero Energy Development is the UKs largest mixed use sustainable community. It was designed to create a thriving community in which ordinary people could enjoy a high quality of life, while living within their fair share of the Earths resources.

We are interested in a building in this new vision in: AMELORATION & MITIGATION

- Energy: operational energy and carbon dioxide (CO2) - Management: management policy, commissioning, site management and procurement - Health and Wellbeing: indoor and external issues (noise, light, air quality etc) - Transport: transport-related CO2 and locationrelated factors - Water: consumption and efficiency inside and out - Materials: embodied impacts of building materials, including lifecycle impacts like embodied carbon dioxide - Waste: construction resource efficiency and operational waste management and minimisation - Land Use: type of site and building footprint - Pollution: external air and water pollution - Ecology: ecological value, conservation and enhancement of the site

Energy Performance of Buildings Directive bring at least three major points of support for development 1. A first strength is waiving 1000mp threshold for mandatory energy performance improvements in existing buildings, which means that the entry into force of the new directive, all the buildings in major renovations, regardless of size will have to improve their energy performance . 2. Another important element of the Directive is the introduction of minimum energy performance requirements for minor renovations (including windows, doors, roofs). 3. The third strength is the requirement that all new buildings have a net energy consumption close to zero, since December 2020, new public buildings will comply with this standard since 2018.

better management, and improvement of the existing building stock

reduce the running costs and improve the environmental performance of existing buildings - reduce operational costs - enhance the value and marketability of property assets - give a transparent platform for negotiating building improvements with landlords and owners - provide a route to compliance with environmental legislation and standards, - give greater engagement with staff in implementing sustainable business practices - provide opportunities to improve staff satisfaction with the working environment with the potential for significant improvements in productivity

Energy efficiency of new buildings require more funding

Buildings represent 40% of total EU energy consumption, reducing energy consumption and use renewable energy in the building sector is an important component of measures to reduce EU energy dependence and greenhouse gas emissions greenhouse.
Create a European Fund for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, to assure the public and private capital raising for projects in the field during 20102020, will represent a big step forward.

European citizens would not be so compelled to bear alone the costs of building energy modernization. "

The aims of criteria are: limit energy and water consumption; limit waste production and enhance recycling; favour the use of materials with high environmental performances;

favour the use of renewable resources and of substances which are less hazardous to the environment,
favour indoor well-being;

promote information and education on the correct management of the building.

The total number of points or credits gained in each section is multiplied by an environmental weighting factor which takes into account the relative importance of each section.
Section scores are then added together to produce a single overall score. Once the overall score for the building is known this is translated into a rating on a scale of:

BRE Global (UK) - Pass - Good - Very Good - Excellent - Outstanding A star rating from 1 to 5 stars is also provided
Or LEAF (GERMANY): bronze, silver, gold, platinum etc.

Assessments are carried out by independent Assessors who are trained and licensed an institution with attributes in the field. The Assessor produces a report outlining the developments performance in each of the sections and its overall score. Upon completion of the assessment, the client is presented with a certificate confirming the institution rating. The earlier an Assessor is involved in the design process, the easier it is to gain a high rating in the most cost-effective way.

General requirements In order to apply for the Ecolabel the applicant needs to comply with European, national and local legal requirements. In particular, the building shall be: 1. built legally and respect all relevant laws or regulations of the locality in which it is built, especially those related to landscape and biodiversity conservation; 2. in compliance with European, national and local laws and regulations regarding energy conservation, water sources, water treatment and disposal, construction products and materials, waste collection and disposal, maintenance and servicing of equipment, safety and health dispositions;

BedZED was initiated by BioRegional and BDa ZEDfactory, and developed by the Peabody Trust. It was completed and occupied in 2002. The community comprises 50% housing for sale, 25% key worker shared ownership and 25% social housing for rent.

People move to BedZED with typical lifestyles, and over the years change their behaviour significantly. The holistic design works on three levels:
1.the design solves problems such as heating and water usage; 2. the design and services offered help people make sustainable choices such as walking rather than driving; and 3. the community have created their own facilities and groups to improve quality of life and reduce their environmental impact.
