THE EDUCATION SYSTEM

Key Stage 1 5 to 7 years old; Key Stage 2 7 to 11 years old; Key Stage 3 11 to 14 years old; Key Stage 4 14 to 16 years old.

PRIMARY EDUCATION
For children aged from 5 (4 in Northern Ireland) to 11 years; Key stage 1 and 2 of National Curriculum; 2 parts Infant/Nursery schools (age level 5-7) and junior schools (age level 7-11).

SECONDARY EDUCATION
For children from 11 to 16; Key stage 3 and 4 of National Curriculum; Can also include Sixth form (16-18); At the end secondary education GCSE exam.

GRADING SCALE
A > 80% (excellent); B > 70% (very good); C > 60% (improvement needed); D > 50% (close fail); E > 40% (fail); F < 40% (fail).

TYPES OF SCHOOLS
State schools; Private schools; Faith schools; Boarding schools; Single-sex schools.

STATE SCHOOLS
Funded by the government. Provide free education to pupils. Majority under control of local councils. Minority funded by central government. All local authority maintained schools follow the National Curriculum.

PRIVATE SCHOOLS
Also known as independent or public school in UK. Students must sit an entrance exam. Funded by charging students tuition-average 3000 per semester. Scolarships to reduce cost. High tuition used to pay for the best teachers and provide enriched learning environments.

FAITH SCHOOLS
Around a third of all state schools. Many linked to the Church of England. Sets the ethos of the school. May give priority to applicants who are of the schools faith. Also Jewish, Muslim and Sikh faith schools. In Church of England schools, Religious Education is monitored, but doesnt take much more of the timeable than in secular schools.

BOARDING SCHOOLS
Around 700 in UK. Most are private, very few state boarding schools. Students live in or near the schools ground. Most boarding schools also have day students. Students separated into residential houses. Senior staff appointed as housemasters, taking responsibility for pupils in their house.

SINGLE-SEX SCHOOLS
Male

and female students attend separate classes. Most are private schools. Some studies show children from single-sex schools are outperforming those from mixed schools. Some people feel single-sex learning creates inequalities and gender stereotypes.

TERTIARY EDUCATION

It is the educational level following the completion of a school providing a secondary education; Students are generally aged 18 (17 in Scotland) or over; UK higher education is split into two levels: undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Most higher education courses have a modular structure.

COLLEGE
Between secondary school and university; Sixth form or further education and mature education; Prepare students for university degrees;

UNIVERSITY

Students can apply for a state-provided loan for tuition fee and living costs; Most degrees are 3-4 years;

Grading scale from 0%-100%;
