The Sentence
A sentence is a group of words that tells a
complete thought.
 A sentence always has a subject and a verb
 Many sentences also have an object.
 The sentence order in English is usually as
follows:
 Subject -- verb– object

 Exercise: Write sentence if the group of
words is a sentence. Write not a
sentence if it is not a sentence.

 Statements and Questions

 A statement is a sentence that tells
something. It ends with a period (.)
 A question is a sentence that asks
something. It ends with a question mark
(?).
 Every sentence begins with a capital
letter.

Commands and Exclamations
A sentence that tells someone to do
something is a command. A command
ends with a period.
 A sentence that shows strong feeling
such as surprise, excitement, or fear is
an exclamation. It ends with an
exclamation point (!).
 Remember to begin every sentence with
a capital letter.

The Subject

 The subject tells whom or what the

sentence is about.
 The subject is usually a noun, pronoun,
or a phrase with a noun.
 It tells us who is doing the action and
usually comes before the verb.

3. Romans held this festival on February 15.

The Verb

A verb is a word that can show action.

 When a verb tells what people or things
do, it is called an action verb.
 Some verbs are not action verbs; they
are linking verbs.
