The Devil Made Me Do It

Type Of Documentary-Mixed because it uses a combination of observations, narrations and interviews Themes- The documentary reflects the power of the media and how the media can influence an individuals behaviour, it also reflects the problems in society in relation to youths featured on the documentary and how the problems can be dealt with. Another theme which is presented throughout the documentary and how the problems can be dealt with, another theme which is also presented throughout is the binary opposition of Good V Evil. Religion also being one of the main themes as it shows the difference in Catholicism and Satanic worship. Your/Audience responses: I found it to be very interesting as I learnt how much music can be influenced upon the youth and how two of the girls got sent to prison yet one of them got put into a mental institute. Structure/Narrative: linier, it showed punishment for the three girls and the narrative resolution and it ended on a cliff hanger. Manson was blamed for it and almost given a pardoned excuse. Parental guideness and they listened to Marilyn more than their parents. Performance has a massive impact on the youth. Many enactments through out showing the before and after. Manson had an influence on the murder of the nun has not been fully answered, the narrative was single strand and it was also non-linear as it didnt follow a chronological order Mise En Scene: interview with Manson, shows dark lighting. It represents the youth during the interview and the surrounding portray youth in a very negative way. The sequences are hand picked to show the youth, which are super relaxed and obnoxious pose smoking and playing pool. It is well constructed, subtle but shows many negative scenes of youth. 3 young girls that did it represent the youth of today. Antithesis, the effect of things put side to side one another to show the opposites so they contrast with one another and generate a religious paraphernalia, Dark lighting used for the Manson interview, Negative representation of the youth throughout as the youth are shown smoking, gambling, drinking and fighting throughout the documentary. Manson is heavily made up with make up for his interview. Antithesis is used throughout. Camera: talking head shot, low angle and shows Manson being very powerful as he is the ruler. Birds eye view of people on pavement (voyeuestic filming) achieve material, range of camera shots which have an artistic approach. It is angular and dramatic approach to the story. Voxpoc, mid shot and less planned subject in the middle and there are long shots of buildings and religious buildings that use silhouettes. Talking head shots and low angle shot looking up at Manson this connotes that he is powerful. There was a lot of establishing shots of location in the documentary such as the sky line of the city graveyards and long streets. Editing- Long takes, cut always, basic graphic application, editing during investigation contrast with the editing in Manson performance, binary oppositions and goes slower during the investigation (long process to get convicted) the dynamic parties of worship and satin. When Manson is shown the editing goes faster. Sound- Church bells which contrast with the anger and screaming in Manson's concerts, synthesis drones. There are constant heart beats diegetic and sound which that was present synchronous. During the confessions there are voice overs and many translations throughout Achieve and skills-n/a Graphics- basic and limited

In The Teeth Of Jaws

Themes- Movie making and behind the scenes Your/Audience response- Interesting as it gives an insight to how a classic movie was made and learning how difficult and long it takes to make a movie but also how clever it actually is, also learning about how much money was put into it Structure/Narrative- There is no narrator, but the documentary is structured; the concept of the movie is inspired by the book and the production of the film. Includes all the problems that the crew experienced, for example the shark prop was not always working and then finally the response of the movie, how people stated that they never felt the same about the sea after watching jaws. Mise en scene- Blue screen, which has a projected cartoon shark on it, jaws movie posters and the beach and the sea that the movie was filmed on, Blue screen frequently used in the interviews of the shark image, image of teh sea behind the author, posters of Jaws behind Spielberg as well as locations in Martha's Vineyard. Involved the actors that starred in the film, but now to show how they've aged and to show how long ago the film was made, the lighting casts a shadow across one side of every interviewee's face. Camera- MS/CU/MCU shots are used throughout the interviews and rule of third has also been used (interviewees being placed on the left and right of screen) Location and establishing shots of Martha's Vineyard which was were the film was filmed. Very little B roll. Interviews filmed all at different times and angles, such as medium shot, close up, or medium close up. The camera is a hand held during the interviews and this helps keep a constant straight shot for every interview Editing- Very little B roll the majority of the documentary is in fragments of interviews all edited together slow paced editing as it shows large chunks of the interview not just sentences or two to create conversational response and documentary, Slow paced editing as it shows large chunks of interview, not just a sentence or two to create a conversational response and documentary. Sound- Played the jaws theme tune, was on very rarely and non-diegetic music that related to the topic, For sound, they played the Jaws theme tune, even if it was rarely, non-diegetic music that related to the topic of the interview, for example faster paced music when talking about a dramatic scene, as well as music from the film itself apart from the theme tune, no voice over, it lets the interviews tell the story.
