What is Engineering?
What is Engineering?
Design Teamwork Application of Math & Sciences Management & Communication Technical and Lateral Problem Solving
Science: A system of knowledge covering general truths or the operation of general laws especially as obtained and tested through the scientific method and concerned with the physical world and its phenomena Engineering: The art or science of making practical application of the knowledge of pure sciences, as physics or chemistry, as in the construction of engines, bridges, buildings, mines, ships and chemical plants.
Chemical Engineering
Chemical Engineering is the application of physics, chemistry and biology principles For example: Plant Design: cosmetics, plastics, household products Create artificial organs and microorganisms to clean up oil spills Consult for sustainable energy and environmental practices
Material Engineering
Relates to: Applying the properties of Matter to problem solve Investigation of the relationship between the structure of materials Discovering new materials/material combinations
Examples include:
Civil Engineering
One of the oldest branches of Engineering Relates to: Structural Geotechnical Transportation systems and planning Environmental/Municipal/Water Management
Mineral Engineering
Safely extracting minerals out of the earth Relates to: The planning and management of extraction Structural planning of the mine Geotechnical Analysis
Electrical Engineering
Deals with electrical products and systems Relates to: Magnetism Hardware Circuits Artificial Intelligence
Examples:
Computer Engineering
One of the newer engineering disciplines, and one that is quickly evolving, usually with the use of programming. Relates to: Software Apps Games Communication Artificial Systems
Mechanical Engineering
Chances are, if it moves a mechanical engineer designed it Relates to: Mechanical Systems: Machines, automobiles. Energy Flow: Thermodynamic applications Material Properties: Manufacturing sector Mechatronics: Robotics and automation Biomechanical systems: Prosthetics, artificial heart
Industrial Engineering
Relates to: Operations Research Human Factors Product/Process Optimization Programming Applied Logic
Opportunities in Engineering
Consulting and Design Firms Management Business Academia (teaching and research) Government, Law and Policy Medical literally anything
Self-regulated profession that conducts Engineering practices for the safeguard of society and public welfare P.Eng as regulated by Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) Three components are required to attain a P.Eng:
An ethics component An accredited program as an academic requirement Two years of engineering work experience
Engineering Undergrad
4 to 5 year program Approximately 30 hours of classes Tight-knit community Includes Lecture, Tutorials, and Labs
Extra-curricular Involvement
Student Government:
Design Clubs
Interest Clubs
Strong Community Spirit All Engineering Students in accredited programs can undertake the OBLIGATION (i.e. receive the Iron Ring)
