I am concerned about providing primary requisites for our people. Free education, free medical aid, and free basic amenities like drinking water. Education is for the head; medical care is for the heart; and pure water is for the body. These three cover the main requirements of life.- said Bhagavan

History.
People living in the affected villages suffered from having no supply of water in their communities, and were required to walk barefooted in the hot sun for miles everyday to secure a bare minimum of water for their needs. The inadequacy of the water supply in the area was due not to the inadequacy of water as such, but rather to the failure of the National and State governments to agree on the use of water from rivers that could have supplied the much-needed water to the Rayalaseema area.

On November 23, 1994, Bhagawan announced the inauguration of a Water Supply Project to be undertaken under the auspices of the Sathya Sai Central Trust, for the purpose of bringing desperately needed water to the drought-stricken area of Rayalaseema, in South India.

Swamis statement.
"I wish to draw the attention of the Prime Minister to the 45-year-old water problem that is affecting most parts of Rayalaseema, especially in remote villages, where people have to walk several miles to get a pot of drinking water. This needs immediate redressal. Rivers are the gift of God. In rivers like the Krishna, the Godavari, a lot of water is allowed to flow into the sea. There is no point in every State claiming right over the river waters and quarreling with each other over riparian rights. The waters of the Krishna and the Tungabhadra rivers can be harnessed to supply the much-needed water to Rayalaseema. If there is constraint of finance, I am prepared to meet the cost even if it is 100 or 200 crores for fulfilling this dire need of the Rayalaseema people. The devotees are prepared to make any sacrifice but I have not stretched my hands to anyone." (Sanathana Sarathi, 12/94, p. 323.)

The Water Project was to have been undertaken by the National Government in cooperation with two area State Governments, but after two years, nothing happened. It was only after the Government failed to initiate the project to relieve the suffering of the affected villagers, that Bhagawan undertook this enormous Project himself. In a commentary on the disputed use of rivers in India, Bhagawan urged that all rivers should be placed under the governance of the Indian National Government to eliminate such disputes and to ensure adequate water supplies for all.

In this District also there is a high concentration of fluorides in the ground water due to frequent failure of monsoons and severe drought conditions. Further, the ground water table is depleting very fast and fluoride level in the ground water is increasing.

Mahaboobnagar.

There are 3191 habitations in this District. Out of these, 1543 habitations are partially covered by drinking water supply. There are more than 467 habitations having excess fluorides and almost the entire District suffers from drought situation due to erratic rainfall and the fast depletion of ground water table.

Way Forward.

Four comprehensive schemes and about 60 individual protected water supply schemes with borewells as source are taken up in this District to provide drinking water to cover about 140 villages. For this comprehensive water supply project, water will be drawn from the Krishna river through pipelines.

This new project, with an estimated budget of nearly Rs.80 crores will bring water from the Chitravati Balancing Reservoir at Peddakotla to quench the thirst of 118 villages (benefitting about Two Hundred Thousand people) in the three Mandals of Puttaparthi, Kothacheruvu and Bukkapatnam. These are the villages that were not covered under the Sri Sathya Sai Water Supply Project of 1995 due to some technical reasons.

Swami to his brother Seshama Raju in 1947

I have a Task: To foster all mankind, and ensure for all people lives full of Ananda. I have a Vow: To lead all who stray away from the straight path, again into goodness and save them. I am attached to a Work that I love: To remove the suffering of the poor and grant them what they lack.

The beginning..

While speaking to the staff of the Super Specialty Hospital in Prashanthi Nilayam on Dec 26th, 2004, Swami said, "Currently we are executing a water project for East and West Godavari Districts. It is possible to live without food but not without water. Water is highly essential. These people live by the side of Godavari but they have no potable water. Though water is available nearby, they are not in a position to have access. For everything, human effort is very essential. To attempt and act is human nature; success or failure is in God's control."

The Scheme of the Godavari Drinking Water Project

26

Andhra Pradesh Water Project

2/23/2014

Scheme

In principle, the scheme is simple - one first constructs an intake well near the water source, in this case the Godavari River. Water is drawn from the source by pumps, and then sent to a reservoir. There it is treated and purified, after which the water, now fit to drink, is distributed through pipes to the designated villages. In the villages, there are local storage tanks, from which water flows to cisterns, to which water taps are connected.

27

Andhra Pradesh Water Project

2/23/2014

Scheme

Similar to the scheme adopted earlier in Mahabubnagar District, Andhra Pradesh. The most important or unique challenge of this project is that the target villages are located in a forest region, especially in East Godavari

Interesting incident
Regarding Subramaniam of Larsen & Toubro and Chief Engineer Kondal Rao "Who are you? Why have you come here? Who has sent you here? How dare you enter our area without our permission? "We are living in the forests and hence are not aware of the magnificent service activities that Swami has undertaken."
31 Andhra Pradesh Water Project 2/23/2014

Interesting incident
I am taking up these projects and completing them of My own accord, without anybody's asking. Water is very essential for the survival of everyone. It is the sustainer of life. What else can be of greater service than providing drinking water to the needy? It is the source and sustenance of life. I do not expect any rituals or worship from you. I am doing it out of My love for you.

The lives of the tribals in Interior East Godavari District are fully intertwined with forest and seasons. They live on forest produce. They cut the trees on the mountain slopes and cultivate pulses and some cereals which is generally called Kondapudu Cultivation. In the recent times, the Government has imposed certain restrictions on felling of trees and ordered that fruit yielding trees must be grown on the mountain areas cleared by tribals. They also make thin threads out of the trunk of a tree called Thati Picchu. These threads have many salient properties and are an exportoriented item used for making baskets and other handicrafts. Their living conditions are still primitive.

Details of the Project

Two intake wells in the East Godavari District at Purushottapatnam and Pamaleru One in West Godavari has at Polavaram Water is sent from the intake wells at the various collection stations to filtration plants where the water is filtered and purified. From there, the water is pumped out and sent through pipes to many storage tanks, from where the water is distributed to the villages.

and the miracle

About five hundred villages in the two districts are expected to be benefited and about half a million people would receive water to drink every single day!
37 Andhra Pradesh Water Project 2/23/2014

A perspective
Swami has provided drinking water to about ten million people! To give you an idea of what this means, please note that the population of New Zealand is about 3.8 million, the population of Belgium is about 10.3 million, the population of Hungary is about 9.8 million, and the population of Sweden is about 8.9 million.
