ENERGY & ITS CONSERVATION

Energy
Energy

can neither be generated nor it can be destroyed. It can only be converted from one form to another. For example, in a room heater, electrical energy is converted to the thermal energy. Turbine converts mechanical energy stored in steam to electrical energy. Energy is in everything. We use energy for everything we do, from making a jump shot to baking cookies to sending astronauts into

Types of Energy
Energy

can be broadly divided into two categories:1. Renewable Energy 2. Non Renewable Energy

Renewable Energy
Renewable

energy can be generated continuously practically without decay of sources of energy. E.g. Solar Energy Wind Energy Geothermal Energy Hydro Energy

Solar Energy
Solar

energy can be converted into electrical energy by using solar panels, or alternatively, be used as thermal energy using solar water heaters, solar cookers etc.

Wind Energy
India

is

third producer electricity generation using wind power by wind mills.

worlds largest of

Hydro Energy
Using

dams, water is allowed to pass through turbine blades, which produces electricity. In India, after coal, most of the energy is produced by this method.

Non Renewable
Non

renewable energy cannot be generated again and again, e.g. energy generated from combustion of fossil fuels, energy from coal and gas etc.

Why to Conserve?
We

have limited fuels available on earth. Our demand for energy is increasing day-by-day. It is possible that someday, most of fuels will be exhausted, and we will have to switch over to alternate energy.

Limited Fuels
At

present consumption levels Crude oil will last only for 40 years. Coal will be finished in nearly 200 years. Gas will last for 60

Increasing Consumption
Furthermore,

our consumption is increasing day-by-day. This means fuels will last much earlier than expected. The only solution is ..

Energy Conservation
-
Energy

conservation is the reduction in the amount of energy consumed in a process or system, or by an organization or society, through rational use and reduction of waste.

Star Ratings
BEE

has also initiated Star Rating System for electrical appliances e.g. refrigerator, CFL, geysers etc. In this system, 1-5 stars are allotted to products depending on their energy efficiency. A five star product means that it consumes least energy in its segment.

At Home
Tell

family to take material out from fridge if it is to be heated, some time earlier so that cooking gas consumption is low. We should not open fridge door frequently. Watching interesting programs on TV is interesting, but afterwards, TV should be switched off.

At Home
While

going to purchase new products, e.g. refrigerator, geysers, CFL etc., we should insist upon purchasing a five star product rather than cheap and energy waster product.

At Home

Have your car tuned regularly. Keep your tires properly inflated. Avoid lengthy engine idling. When you buy a car, choose one that gets good mileage. Pace your driving.

In Office
Always

switch off lights and fans while going out of the office.

In OFFICE
In

Office computer , we should switch off computers before going out of office.

In OFFICE

Switching off non-essential overhead lighting in day-lit areas and lighting in unoccupied rooms (e.g. equipment and storage areas) Switching off monitors, printers and other excess electrical equipment after work hours and break timing. Checking and cleaning of air conditioner filters and chillers on a scheduled basis. Using sunlight and less of artificial lighting. Using translucent ceiling in retail outlets.

In OFFICE

Double-side printing: Saving paper saves energy because it takes 10 times more energy to manufacture a piece of paper than it does to put an image on it.
Energy Star models: When purchasing PCs, monitors, printers, fax machines and copiers, look for Energy Star models. If appropriate, use ink-jet printers - they consume 95% less energy than laser printers. Similarly, laptops use 90% less energy than desktop computers.

In OFFICE

Training and awareness sessions should be organized for employees on energy conservation. Turn off all personal office appliances including fans, radios and desk lamps Enable power management features on laser printers and/or turn laser printers when not actively printing.

In OFFICE
Replace

desktop PCs with laptops. Save paper. Photocopy only what you need. Have a qualified professional perform an energy audit. Check with your company for names of auditors. There should be facilities managements service systems that can respond immediately to facilities and environmental problems.

What have we learnt ?

Energy

does work. Energy is never used up it is simply converted from one form to another. Fuels and food are sources of energy. There are 3 main classes of fuel which can be used to generate electricity: Fossil fuels, renewable fuels and nuclear fuels.

Fossil

fuels such as gas, coal and oil and renewable fuels such as wood are burnt and heat is generated. This heat is used to boil water and the steam that is created is used to turn large propellers called turbines. These turbines then turn electrical generators, produces electricity.
are other sources of energy such as: Solar power, wind power, hydroelectric power and wave power.

There

Conclusion
To

make sure we have plenty of energy in the future, its up to all of us to use energy wisely. We must all conserve energy and use it efficiently. Its also up to those who will create the new energy technologies in the future.

THE FUTURE IS IN YOUR HANDS!

How will it help?

Take
We

an example:

replace one 100W bulb with a 13W CFL. Let us assume electricity is available for Rs. 3.00 per unit, and this bulb is used for 6 Hours a day. The annual saving would be.

Power Saving
Power

saved: 100W-13W = 87W =87W X 6 Hours X 365 Days =17520 WH =17.520 kWH or Units =Rs. 52.56 Say Rupees 50 per one bulb replaced.

So,
Remember

to replace light bulbs with CFLs so electricity could be available for more time. You can also get a money saving after reducing your electricity bill.

What Else can be Do?

We

should discuss energy conservation with our friends and tell others how can we reduce energy consumption.

Thank You.
