Screwvala is popularly known as Ronnie Screwvala Listed on the Indian Stock Exchange as UTV Software Communications Ltd. Started as content producers for Doordarshan. Start of satellite TV in 1992 was a booster Produced shows like Indias first game show Saamp Seedi, Indias first daily afternoon soap Shanti, a chat show Chakravyuha, etc.

The dubbing division which was estd. in 1992 adds localized voice in various Asian languages. Clients serviced include Twentieth Century Fox, Discovery Channel. Cartoon Network, Walt Disney, Warner Bros. etc In 1994 they expanded their activities to sell advertising commercial time, it started off with Metro Dhamaka followed by Shanti

In 1995 they forayed into post production


In 1995-96, ventured into movie production and distribution. The idea was to develop into an integrated entertainment company, with a focus on content creation. Since then have produced movies like LOC, Lakshya, Lagaan, Bluffmaster, Swades, etc.

Entered the animation arena in 1998 UTV Toons Their advertising films division is in the business of producing films and audio-visuals for agencies and direct clients. Clients serviced include HLL, Procter&Gamble, Maruti Udyog, United Breweries, etc.

Produce multiple genre and multi lingual content catering to all kinds of viewers. Focus on top-end broadcasters like STAR, Sony, Zee, etc. Maximize revenues through airtime marketing.

Movie Production and Distribution


Ventured by way of co-production and distribution alliances.
Co-produce and produce movies with a strong story line, backed by a good star cast and director. To complete the movies in time and in-cost, they sign firm contractual agreements with directors and actors/actresses. Focus on large and medium budget films Develop a movie distribution network at national and international levels.

UTV Communications (USA) LLC Set up in 2004, UTV Communications (USA) LLC spearheads growth in the US market in motion picture distribution, international coproductions as well as syndication of library and joint ventures in animation.
UTV Communications (UK) Ltd. Set up in 2004, UTV Communications (UK) Ltd.s primary activity is the film distribution business in the UK. UTV Communication (Mauritius) Ltd. Set up in 2004, UTV Communications (Mauritius) Ltd.s core business is film distribution in all parts of the world barring the US and UK.

Going international.
FILM PRODUCTION & DISTRIBUTION
Under the banner of UTV Motion Pictures Distribution of Indian films in the international market. Reiterated UTV's position in defining New Age Hindi cinema Lagaan / Rang De Basanti. UTV and Adlabs opted to co-produce movies along with major studios from Hollywood. Adlabs inked a five-year deal with LA-based Hyde Park Entertainment for its foray into Hollywood. Agreement with Will Smiths Overbrook Entertainment Inc to produce two full length feature films. Sony will distribute them worldwide.

UTV Communications has also entered into an agreement with Fox Searchlight Pictures for the distribution and exploitation in respect of a film - I Think I Love My Wife. Mira Nair-directed The Namesake, a three-member venture with Fox Searchlight Pictures, Japan based Entertainment Farm and UTV contributing equally. UTV Software Communications has signed a deal with Miramax International Film Corporation to distribute 130 titles for a period of ten years. UTV has been given the rights for theatrical, television and home video rights, restricted to the Indian continent

The model is very clear. To get 35 per cent of business from international revenues. Their understanding of the international market would help in the process of building relationships with production companies who can market their films better there.
The international companies in turn will make use of UTV's best production and technological skills that obviously have much lower costs.

ANIMATION UTV Toons is the largest animation company in India Nandini Vaidyanathan joined UTV Toons as COO in December 2000 to facilitate the growth of the company's 2D business in the world market. UTV also struck co-production deals with Sony Pictures Entertainment and Fox Searchlight Pictures. In addition, the company has co-production and animation outsourcing deals with Porchlight Entertainment and Mike Young Prods.
UTV is developing five animation movies ready for release in 2010. The company would be investing Rs 135 crore in coproduction and distribution of these movies.

Dont write off Ronnie Screwvala from animation business yet. The company has major plans in animation. A Rs 24 crore investment in a 25,000 square feet animation facility has widened the path to becoming a leader in the animation space. Screwvalla will have all three models - outsourcing, co production and producing original content.

UTV enters gaming arena


UTV has announced its foray into gaming through proposed acquisitions of the controlling stake in Ignition Entertainment Ltd. [Ignition], a console gaming company based in U.K. and Indiagames Ltd. [IG], a mobile and broadband gaming company in India. This makes UTV the largest Gaming and Animation entity in India. UTV now has competencies in Game development, publishing and distribution across mobile, online and console platforms worldwide and the capability to create IP's in all forms of content, including Live Action and Animation. The outlay for investment towards Animation properties and gaming acquisitions will be around Rs. 260 crores.

In conclusion.
On Screwvala's expansion plate is not just movies and animation but also new media content including gaming. The fun, as he says, is playing in a bigger field. UTV will have a presence across the value chain - they can co-produce a movie, provide its animation, distribute it, and create the promos and the games. Keep an eye on this content powerhouse.
