Unit Plan Algebra One Rational Expressions

By Melissa May

The Details
This unit plan was formulated for an Algebra One Classroom discussing Rational Expressions. Each lesson provides in depth techniques on teaching, homework assignments, and solutions. Within the unit there are also in-class activity days, review sheets, and exams.

* Units involving an In-Class Activity Day as well

How Each Lesson Aids Students with Special Needs

Every lesson comes with a homework handout with ample space to complete assignments, so that students with visual or motor difficulties can successfully complete homework. Homework problems are scaffolded so that students always have a guide to look off of and hopefully create similar responses in more difficult questions.

Various homework sheets contain a problem completely finished, so that student can view a finished product as a model for their own work. Teacher notes are color coded so that Aids can easily follow through assignments for students. Solutions to all homework assignments are accessible to Aids when helping with homework.

Lecture vs. Activity Days

Most of the lessons planned in this unit are structured around lectures. On key topics, multiple days can be used to make sure students understand important ideas Lets take a look at look at Solving Rational Equations!

DAY ONE
Objectives: 1. Solve rational equations by using the common-denominator method. 2. Solve rational equations by graphing. Begin lesson by asking how to solve a rational equation ______.

Three Methods: 1. Guess-and-Check 2. Common Denominator Method 3. Graphing Going over each method helps students to see that there are easier ways to solve an equation rather than just estimating.

DAY TWO: ACTIVITY DAY

Objectives: 1. To show students a real-world example of how rational functions are used in FUN contexts. 2. Simplifying rational eq. in real-world situations. 3. Evaluate if students understand the basic concepts of simplifying rational expressions while they have FUN researching roller coasters!
