Linux Networking

Introduction
National Institute of Science & Technology

• Networking- Our need and our future.

• Linux- A revolution in the field of

Operating System.

•Linux Networking- The most powerful

tool to drive the world.

Linux Networking

Installing Linux
National Institute of Science & Technology

• In terms of networking, two things are important

•Partitioning the hard disk

Values for root(/) and swap should be
entered
correctly.
• Configuring the NIC Card
Values for IP address and Subnet mask
should
be entered correctly.

Linux Networking

Standardizing IP Addresses in a Network

National Institute of Science & Technology

• Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)

Server

Used for assigning IP addresses to each client

automatically.

Used for large number of clients.

Linux Networking

Standardizing IP Addresses in a Network

National Institute of Science & Technology

• Domain Name System (DNS) Server

– Used to assign names to IP addresses.

– Easier to remember names than numbers.

– It maintains a database for storing names and numbers.

Linux Networking

Configuring a Web Server

National Institute of Science & Technology

Apache Web Server

•Launching Websites.

•Uses httpd daemon.

Linux Networking

Enabling Access to Other OS

National Institute of Science & Technology

• SAMBA
– Share a Linux directory tree with Windows computers.
– Share a Windows directory with Linux computers.
– Share a Linux printer with Windows computers.
– Share a Windows printer with Linux computers.
– It uses SWAT utility tool.

Lalan Prasad [12]

Linux Networking

Enabling Access to Other OS

National Institute of Science & Technology

• Network File System (NFS)

– Standard for sharing files and printers on a directory with Linux
and Unix computers.
– It uses three services:
• Portmapper-manages the remote procedure call (RPC) connections,
which are used by protocols such as NFS.
• Nfsd -It translates NFS requests into actual requests on the local file
system.
• Mountd -It services the requests for mounting and unmounting file
systems.

Linux Networking

Conclusion
National Institute of Science & Technology

• Linux provides a safe and secure environment

for networking.

• It is more reliable.
