Information about me (very quick).
Talk about some key technologies that I have
used to develop students speaking skills and
story of how I developed these ideas.
Explain and show some of the actual work the
students have done.

A quick story
In 2000 I saw screen
capture technology for
the first time.
Allows you to record
the screen of your
computer
I thought this can be
used for feedback
But it took me 6 years
to find out how to do
it.

The idea starts
First example just correcting grammar.
Providing general feedback to the whole class
Providing feedback on vocabulary
Providing feedback on grammar
Began to realise it could be applied to all subjects
and contexts
Feedback on blogs
Long essays on MA programme

The technology
Original work done with Techsmith Camtasia
I then began to use JING ( free tool)
More recently began to work with SnagIt ( about
$30 for educational version)
Experimented with other free tools like ScreenR
and Screencast-o-matic

Even for developing speaking skills

Proving very popular
Students can upload PDF, Word, PowerPoint and
then add webcam recordig
Free for up to 60 minutes
Great for distance learning, pair work oral work etc.
Now using both screen capture tools and Present.

Conclusions
Despite suggesting this idea more than 8 years ago
it is only now that it is really possible.
Idea can be used for a huge range of areas of
teaching and learning.
More research beginning to emerge.
Enormous interest in the idea including a second
visit to the University of Oxford in August
