Columbus and colonialism • I think that the most important topics in unit 1 were Columbus and colonialism. I think that it is important because that’s how everything started. When Columbus came to the states he found the Tainos and when he didn’t find gold the killed the indigenous people and took the land. When they took the land they tortured the indigenous people by setting them on fire, hanging them and even feeding them to the dogs. This made the indigenous people fearful to fight back. Then the people that were left were made into slaves that worked on encomiendas for the white people. If Columbus never came to the U.S, We would be indigenous people still. Slavery and segregation • The most important topics in unit 2 are slavery and segregation. When the settlers in the states needed people to work in the fields they went to Africa to get slaves. The slaves were sold at slave auctions to the highest bidder then they went off to work for their slave masters. They were brought in slave ships through the middle passage and it was horrible and some people even committed suicide by jumping off the boat. Then the 13 amendment freed the slaves, but they then faced segregation due to the racist Jim Crow laws. They said that colored and white would be separated but equal but they really weren’t. Then segregation in the schools ended with the case of “Brown v.s Board of education”. Segregation ended completely with the Civil Rights act. If slavery continued we would have been slaves and if segregation still existed we would be treated differently. Mexican Independence • The most important topic that we learned in unit 3 was the Mexican independence. Mexico was controlled by the white people and they were trying to take the land. The indigenous people planed to fight back that was led by Miguel Hidalgo. They fought the Spanish but Hidalgo was captured and killed. Then new leaders like Jose Maria Morelos and Vicente Guerrero who was the fist president. With out the Mexican Independence fight Mexico would have still been controlled by the Spanish and life would be different in Mexico. The most Important topic • I think that the most important topic of all is Columbus and Colonialism. I think it is because if Columbus didn’t come and take over life in the states would not be like it is today. We would be Indigenous people like it was before Columbus and Colonialism. Three things I learned this quarter. • I learned that Columbus was actually looking for China and India but he found North America instead. • I learned that Slavery ended through the 13th amendment not by Lincoln. • The third thing I learned was that Mexico rebelled against the dictator and they chose the government of democracy. Leadership • My definition of leadership is not to be selfish and think about others. To lead the people to get them what they want not just for your own greed.
