“…Nearly all the grandest discoveries of science
have been the rewards of accurate measurement
and patient long-continued labor in the minute
shifting of numerical results.” – Lord Kelvin

Overview of Research Ethics
• Preamble
• The Principle of Integrity
and Honesty
• The Principle of Fairness
and Justice
• The Principle of Safety
and Beneficence
– Biological
– Chemical
– Fieldwork 14
Guidelines for the Department (1)
Develop departmental priority R&D areas
Develop & strengthen laboratories,
equipment, supplies
Organize thesis sections
Maintenance program for research labs,
equipment, supplies
Training program for students
Lab safety, first aid, fieldwork, fire
prevention
15
Guidelines for the Department (2)
System for selection of topic & mentor
Monitor progress of thesis
Set guidelines for: use of labs and
facilities, fieldwork; working off-hours/
overnight
Organize research seminars
Conduct exit interview and evaluation
Archive thesis (with CD copy), submit to
international database
16
Guidelines for the Department (3)
Nominate best thesis for Awards (SOSE
Research, DOST, BPI-DOST, etc).
Encourage submission of thesis for
presentation in conferences or publication.
Explore interdisciplinary research areas.
Seek funding to support research
activities.
17
Guidelines for the Mentor (1)
Guide the student through the entire
process
Meet thesis class regularly: discussion of
relevant literature, training in lab
techniques and the use of equipment,
other preparations.
Review and approve thesis proposal.
Set time-table and monitor progress of
research.
18
Guidelines for the Mentor (2)
Oversee safety, security, laboratory waste
management.
Advise in thesis writing.
Identify research work which is suitable for
nomination for awards, presentation or
publication.
19
Guidelines for the Student (1)
Be aware of research priorities of your
Department and School.
Read the scientific literature regularly.
Familiarize yourself with the requirements
of topics which interest you.
Attend research seminars.
20
Guidelines for the Student (2)
Observe safety measures!
Verify your insurance.
Report any health concerns, allergies, etc.
Learn first aid (if appropriate).
Be familiar with all safety requirements, fire
hazards, MSDS, biohazards, emergency
numbers.
21
Guidelines for the Student (3)
Maintain a proper laboratory notebook. All
raw data should be recorded immediately.
Your notebook should be understandable
enough so that someone else can replicate
your experiment.
Don’t trust your memory! Write everything
down as soon as possible.
22
Guidelines for the Student (4)
Follow the guidelines of the Department
regarding use of the labs, equipment, etc.
Observe the proper use of equipment.
Be considerate of others.
Don’t waste chemicals and other
materials. Conserve water and electricity.
Observe proper waste management.
Report problems as soon as possible.
23
Guidelines for the Student (5)
Give your feedback on the thesis process
to your mentor and Department.
Requirements for BS
Written work with CD
Departmental seminar
Additional requirements for MS, PhD
Presentation at symposia
Publication in refereed journal
24
Important tips for the Student
Plan and pace your work. ~70% of time
and effort is usually spent for preparation,
preliminary runs, calibration, etc.
Contingencies: always have a Plan B!
It is better to have an excess of data, than
a lack it.
The length of an experimental description is
not indicative of its difficulty
25

So, what’s the Thesis all about?
Learning by doing. Becoming by doing.
Being creative in Science and
Engineering.
Producing something you can be proud
of!
29
So, what’s research all about?
If you know exactly
what you’re doing,
then it wouldn’t be
research!

good science is to
have fun doing it."
