Lotus Notes 8.5.1 Introduction
Two Lotus notes configurations
Notes 8.5.1 Standard Configuration (notes.exe)
default one GM will use
also referred to as the rich client,
makes use of the Java-based Eclipse technology to enhance
existing Notes functionality
(mail, calendar, contacts, etc.)
provide new features such as sidebars

Notes 8.5.1 Basic Configuration (nlnotes.exe)
is very similar in experience to the Notes 6
BASIC=without extra functionalities

How to open Lotus notes and which shortcut to
use
You will have 4 options in the start menu:
4 shortcuts: users will receive end user communication to know
which one to use.
4 shortcuts
Notes minder: to display popup new mail
Roaming notes= for desktop/roaming users.
This will launch the standard configuration with all the
options and is pointing to H:\notes\data.
Configuration files for users need to be on the home
drive as they often switch pc and always need their
data on every pc
Lotus notes 8.5= for laptop users:
The configuration files are stored on their C: drive
and this shortcut is pointing to the C:
Lotus notes 8.5 basic = for laptop users:
this is to launch the basic configuration nlnotes.exe
without additional features on the C: drive.

Shortcut laptop users
Start in: location for 654 was "C:\Program
Files\lotus\notes\, now local Lotus Notes 8 starts in the
framework folder (see example below for the local notes
(for laptop users)).

-sa is added in properties of shortcut in start menu:

Shortcut roaming users
Additional part is added in target field:
"=H:\Notes\data\notes.ini

To launch Notes 8 (Basic Configuration),:
Change target field shortcut to nlnotes.exe
OR
add one of two command line switches, -sa or -basic. For
example: C:\Program Files\Lotus\Notes\notes.exe -sa

New naming conventions
Some names changed in notes 8.5.1:
"concept" in Notes 6.5 client equivalent in Notes 8.5.1 client

CHANGES IN THE FILE MENU
Now all options can be found back in file-
preferences:

To change the location document go to file-
preferences-locations select the location
document that you want to change, click on edit
(before it was file-mobile-edit current location)

Replication options can now be found back by
going to file-replication-application options
(before called replication options)

Location of notes files for Laptop users
NSF files like names.nsf and desktop file, id file,..

Changes in the contents of the notes.ini
In Lotus Notes 654 only 3 fields were needed in notes.ini:
[Notes], KitType=1 and Directory

LN 8.5.1 needs a lot more entries in the notes.ini
see page 25 of troubleshooting guide:
ND8.5_TrblshootingGuide_v1_11.doc
Remark: Please keep this in mind when stripping the notes.ini

Backup of the 6.5.4 files (needs to be
confirmed)

Local notes configuration files will not be backed up
For roaming users, files will be backed up to C:\temp
The backup will only be available for 2 weeks
After two weeks a script (cleanup.vbs) will cleanup files +
will place a cleanup flag under the Data directory.

Files that will be backed up: needs to be
confirmed
Its possible that you need the files that have been backed up when they
are corrupt after the upgrade:

6.5.4 version: We had 4 installation packages via tivoli:

The Lotus Notes 8.5.1.= english client + MUI packages can be installed

The notes.ini will be checked for the parameter UserInterface=xx .
Notes interface will be in that language after upgrade.
If the parameter does not define a language, UserInterface=xx parameter will be
removed, and the client will launch in English (default).
The user can choose to download additional languages via ADD NEW PROGRAMS.
Attention: Language packs only change the language for the client interface for
Lotus Notes.
The mail file design require a language-specific template
(for GME will be available in English, French, Dutch, German) but during pilot only
ENGLISH is available. Other languages will be available end of July.

How to change the language:
File-preferences
Regional settings
Change language in regional profile
Close Notes and reopen
OR:
Open the Replace the XX by the notes.ini
Look for userinterface=XX
language the user wants: for example: userinterface=DE (for german)

troubleshooting
First time opening notes 8.5.1: workspace missing
go to Open-applications-right-click the workspace and
choose: Set bookmark as homepage.
Unexpected Network Error (will not occur
anymore)

When:
Roaming Users have Lotus notes open when
Lotus Notes 8.5 advertisement runs.
Lotus Notes 8.5 script runs every 4-6 hours
so the end user can get the error again as
long as they have not upgraded to Lotus
Notes 8.5.
Resolution:
Close and reopen Notes
Install Lotus notes 8.5

Bookmark cache procedure

What?
The rparams clean parameter only deletes the cached files in the
workspace folder on C: drive (not H:)and keeps the user
preferences.
When to use?
When notes doesnt start at all after doing basic
troubleshooting (killing processes)
Notes giving error messages like:

Using Parameter rparams clean

Right-click shortcut on desktop and add RPARAMS clean in the target
field (add a space before -)

You should see a message notes configurations settings have been refreshed
Dont forget to eliminate the parameter after troubleshooting

How to use Parameter rparams clean
(only for laptop users)
What?
This parameter resets the workspace configuration data on C: drive
(not H:) :
plug-in dependencies, plug-in extension point/contributions, plug-in
bundles information, and caches which are stored in the workspace
folder

When to use?
When notes doesnt start at all after doing basic
troubleshooting (killing processes)
After using the rparams-clean parameter without success
If a user performs an operation that leads to a client hang or
crash, the corresponding bad runtime context information may
be retained in the Configuration Area, and then client cannot
be launched the next time due to bad context runtime data.

Using Paremeter rparams -resetconfig
Right-click shortcut on desktop and add RPARAMS clean in the target
field (add a space before -)

You should see the message:
notes configurations settings have been refreshed
Dont forget to eliminate the parameter after troubleshooting

How to use Using Paremeter rparams
resetconfig (only for laptop users)

Renaming workspace folder = last resort
New workspace directory is built from the
framework folder in the notes client
programs directory with all of the default
settings
this not advisable!

Reinstalling Lotus notes 8.5.1 is not
DONE!

Lotus notes 8.5.1 issues and
things to keep in mind
Shared logon caveats (only for laptops enabled)
When shared logon is enabled, Notes ID will then be tied to the
userprofile\machine\domain. Needs to be kept in mind when:
Deleting the Windows profile
Refreshing the users machine
Moving the machine to a new domain
Workaround: Disable notes shared logon, otherwise
user will be locked out: file-security-user security
Value in notes.ini:
Roaming users: EnableNewNSL=1 = not enabled
Laptops users: EnableNewNSL=3 = enabled

Renaming a profile of Windows 7 laptop user
(needs to be validated by the project team)
Things to keep in mind :
Shared logon: If this is enabled there is a *bin file
located in the Windows profile. A secret key file is
created that ties the ID to the machine/profile:
C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Lotus
Notes\xxxxxxxxxxxxx.bin
Users notes files
C:\Users\profile\AppData\Local\Lotus\Notes
Libraries
C:\Users\profile\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windo
ws\Libraries

GM preferred
After 24 hours, laptop users their location
document will automatically switch to
GM preferred
following lines are added to the notes.ini:
$LocalModePorts=1
$LocalModeConfigured= (date time of configuration)
$LocalModeSwitched= (1 or 0, if the location has been
switched)
If this doesnt happen, check manual
configuration steps on EKMS

NSD error when launching notes
Immediately after a migration, if you
encounter an NSD error after launching
Lotus Notes, you can do the following to
correct the error:
If file C:\Program
Files\Lotus\Notes\notes.ini exists,
rename it
If directory C:\Program
Files\Lotus\Notes\Data\ exists, rename it
Relaunch Lotus Notes

Users Home page shortcut for mail file
After upgrade a users Home page mail shortcut
may open the local replica rather than the server
replica (even though the users current location
document is pointing to the server replica).

This may also occur when selecting Open | Mail..
How to solve?
Right-click on the workspace
Choose stack replica icons
OR
Add the notes.ini parameter StackedIcons=1

Recent contacts grow size of the names.nsf on H:\Notes\Data
This feature can be turned off, but is default on.
When sending an email notes adds the name automatically to
your personal contacts.
How to turn off this feature?
File-preferences-contacts
Add a checkmark next to Do not automatically add names to the
Recent Contacts view
Go to contacts-the Recent Contacts view and delete them by
selecting all of the documents and moving them to the trash
folder

Note: this will remove type-ahead capability see next slide
Mail/ Type Down Addressing
Now its much easier to address emails. As you type a name
Lotus Notes will select the most recently used addresses.
I dont have all the options in my menu bars
Issues:
I go to file-replication and I dont see an option
to create a new replica
I go to file-application
and I dont have an
option to
Refresh/replace design
Make a new copy
Solution:
Go to view
Select advanced menus

Smarticons are missing (signature).

Please encourage users to utilize the built in signature
functionality in their preference Settings
If the user insists on restoring their R5 signature file:
Go to file-preferences-toolbars
Click on import-browse to the notes\data\w32 folder
Select the univers.smi
OK
If it still doesnt work: go to file-preferences-toolbar-customize
locate the custom Smarticon, select the icon)
copy the signature formula.
Go to new button, choose an icon
Paste the formula
Click OK
What is sametime and can I use it?

The Sametime sub-menu of the Tools menu is present
even though the LCS plug-in is installed

Sametime is an instant messaging program to chat
designed by IBM. GM users use Microsoft office
communicator. The custom Communicator plug-utilizes
Sametime to function. However, it is intended to force
Sametime references to be hidden because the user is
actual utilizing Communicator functionality.
Iff its not hidden, you should add im_no_setup=1 to
notes.ini

Unread messages display in black text in 8.5 (in 6.5.4 they
displayed in red).

Working as designed = similar to outlook
GM has asked that the help desk NOT
accommodate a users request to make
unread messages display in red text.
Please encourage user to embrace
This change and use the out of the box color
Coding options.

Pin to taskbar issue

When users pin the notes icon to the
taskbar they get following error:

To solve this Close lotus notes before
pinning the icon to the taskbar

(adressed to engineering)

If user wants smaller icon:
Create a new folder in the root of the C Drive called
Notes 8.5.1 Launch or similar.
Drag the Desktop shortcut for Notes into this new folder

Right click on the Taskbar and select New Toolbar
Browse to and select the folder Notes 8.5.1 Launch that
