QoS ENHANCEMENTS IN WLANs FOR COMMUNICATION
BASED TRAIN CONTROL SYSTEMS
Introduction:
7/11/2013 2
CBTC SYSTEM:
Communication based train control
system(CBTC) is an automated railway signalling
system to ensure the safe operation of rail vehicles
using data communications.

Communication Technologies:
7/11/2013 3
Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access
(WiMAX)
Global System for Mobile communications-
Railway (GSM-R)
wireless local area networks (WLANs)

Objective:
7/11/2013 5
To improve the quality of services in
communication based train control systems by
using IEEE802.11p based Wireless local area
networks.

Earlier works:
7/11/2013 6
IEEE 802.11a based WLANs are used for the
CBTC Environment.

LIMITATIONS:
IEEE 802.11a based WLANs are not effectively
suitable to vehicular environments for exchanging
the datas in the fast changing networks.

Proposed System:
7/11/2013 7
By using IEEE 802.11p based WLANs to provide
communication availability in vehicular
environments.
Increase the throughput
Reduce the delay
Using EMDV protocol for effective deliver of
safety related messages in vehicular
environment.

IEEE 802.11p:
7/11/2013 8
The IEEE 802.11p has frequency band at 5.9 GHZ.
The 10 MHz bandwidth is used.
The use of 10 MHz channel leads to transfer of data to be
robust against fading.
CCH (Control channel) usage is limited to broadcast of
safety-related data and remaining channels are Service
Channels (SCHs) available for non-safety related data
transmission.
Messages are Prioritized in Four categories.
The Channels of 802.11p

EMDV Protocol:
7/11/2013 10
Emergency message dissemination for vehicular
environments (EMDV)
Consider a forwarding range shorter than the
communication range.
A controlled message retransmission within the
dissemination area.
Prepare Message
Find Next Hop
Receive Message
Software Requirements:

Operating System : Linux

Simulator Tool : NS 2(version 2.34)

Conclusion:
7/11/2013 17
Generally CBTC Systems have strict
requirements for availability of the wireless
communication to transfer the data.
Simulation results show that 802.11p provides
effective service in the vehicular networks compared to
the 802.11a and with the EMDV approach the safety
related messages are delivered in better manner.
