Background
Too many women die related to childbirth
Too young/too old, too many, too close, too
late, too sick




Childbirth must not carry with the risk of
death or disability for woman & infant
Background
The medical cause of maternal deaths are similar
throughout the world:
Hemorrhage
Sepsis
Hypertensive disorder of
pregnancy (Eclampsia)
Prolonged or obstructed labor
Complications of
unsafe abortions
What is Safe Motherhood
A womans ability to have
a safe and healthy
pregnancy and delivery
What is The Safe Motherhood
Initiative?
Is a global effort that aim to reduce
deaths and illnesses among women and
infants, especially in developing
countries
Was launched in 1987 to improve
maternal health and cut the number of
maternal deaths in half by the year 2000.
