Discuss proposed mechanisms of
action of acupuncture from two points
of view:
Western medicine
Chinese medicine

Applications

TCM theory involves
Qi & Blood
Yin & Yang
Excess & Deficiency
Internal & External
Organ systems, meridians, and points.

Iman Majd MD, L.Ac

Qi: Life force, vital energy behind all physiological
processes.
warms body, pathogen protection, promotes growth
Meridian network system
Disruption of flow results in illness
Mechanism of Qi still mysterious

Qi maintains balance in
the body.
16 meridians
360 regular acupoints
40 commonly used extra
points
Acupoints influence the
physiology

There are over 365 points on the human
body

Each point has a specific set of functions

Usually, several points in different places
are used in treatments.

Points can influence all areas of the body,
points on the foot may be used for
headaches, for example.
Acupuncture points linked together in lines called
meridians
Meridians named for associated Organ
Kidney, Heart, Small Intestine, Bladder
Liver, Pericardium, Triple Energizer, Gallbladder
Spleen, Lung, Large Intestine, Stomach
Meridians have decreased electrical resistance relative
to surrounding skin
Qi measured as microelectrical current
Flows in a circuit
Toes to fingers to head to toes
Up on anterior surface of the body
Down on posterior surface of the body
Blockage in meridian flow produces disease
Therapeutic action of unblocking meridian flow
(Relieving Stagnation)
Pain
Asthma
Heavy, Painful, or Irregular Menstrual Periods
Yin and Yang is a Daoist philosophical concept.
They are means to generalize the opposite
principles which may be observed in all related
phenomena within the natural world.
Yin: water, cold, stillness, dark, night.
Yang: fire, heat, movement, light, day.
A key element to treatment in TCM is to bring the
appropriate balance of Yin and Yang to the
particular organ, system, or area of the body.

Xiang Sheng ( inter-generation ): refers to promoting and
accelerating aspects of the mutual generation of
objects according to the theory of five elements, i.e.,
wood generates fire, fire generates earth, earth
generates metal, metal generates water, and water
generates wood.

Xiang Ke ( inter- inhibition, or control ) : refers to the
restraining and controlling relationships among objects
according to the theory of the five phases, i.e., wood
inhibiting earth, earth inhibiting water, water
inhibiting fire, fire inhibiting metal, and metal
inhibiting wood.
Dalam bahasa Cina, asma disebut sebagai
Siao Cuan.

Siao berarti nafas yang berbunyi.

Cuan berarti nafas yang memburu atau sesak
considers asthma to be an indicator of an underlying
health imbalance.

treats the underlying root imbalance, rather than just
the symptoms.

considers all lifestyle & environmental factors when
deciding the best course of treatment.

includes nutritional & lifestyle recommendations.

Once the underlying imbalance is taken care of, the
symptoms resolve, and the triggers lose their impact.

Deficiency of Energy (Qi) of the Lung, Spleen,
and/or Kidneys. Plus, Accumulation of Phlegm
(hot or cold type).

Caused by inappropriate diet, food additives,
toxin exposure, repeated respiratory infection,
genetics, emotional strain, lack of exercise,
overwork, and even the asthma medications
themselves can further contribute to the
deficiency.

Governs Qi & Respiration

Descending

Control the Body Surface

Opens in the Nose
Governs Qi & Respiration
Inhales clear Qi
Exhales stale Qi
Forms Zong Qi from Gu Qi &
clear Qi
Qi help propel the Blood so Lung
and Heart work together
Stagnation of Lung Qi leads to
cough and asthma
Dominates Ascending &
Descending
Distributes defensive (wie) Qi
and body fluid to entire body
Helps maintain normal
descending function, while
receiving the ascending water
vapor from the kidney
Control the Body Surface

Distributes body fluid to
the tissues which in turn
helps regulate skin
moisture and sweating
Provides Wei Qi
Opens in the Nose
