How to work the four skills in


Primary Education. Some
activities.

The four skills
In Primary Education:
First, ORAL skills (listening & speaking)
Later, move on to WRITTEN skills (reading &
writing).


This doesnt mean that the four skills have no
connection between them; on the contrary, the four
skills should be worked in combination.

Listening
Some kind of activities you can use to work
the LISTENING skill in a Primary Education
class

Presenting Vocabulary
The teacher will show the students real objects and
images, and will name those objects.
For example, if you want to teach the colors of the
rainbow, youll need to prepare a POSTER like this:




Remember: at a first stage, it is not necessary that the students
know the written form.

How to work this song in class:

1. With all the colours on the blackboard, the
teacher sings and points at the different
colours.
2. The same but this time its the students
who point at the colours.

Jump the line
The teacher will place a rope along the classroom.
All the students will be standing in one side of the rope.
The teacher will give each student a small card with an
image of an object (animals, food, clothes, classroom
objects, etc.)
When all the students are ready and they have the small
card, the teacher will name an object and the student with
that card will jump the rope.
The teacher will check that the right student has jumped.
The teacher may give the card with the same object to
different students.

Saying Vocabulary
To review and practice the vocabulary of the lesson
you can also make use of Flash cards:

Singing songs
First, the teacher sings or plays on the cd player
the song, doing mimics, actions or showing
pictures that help the students understand what the
song is about. This first time lets students to
familiarized with the melody of the song too.
Second, the teacher sings line by line, miming or
pointing at the pictures and students repeat after
him/her.
Lastly the teacher and the students sing the song
altogether.

How to work this song in class:

This is an action song, good for warming up. While
the teacher is singing, students touch with both
hands their heads, then their shoulders, their knees,
and then their toes, as the song indicates.
Later, on the second verse, miss out the word
"Head", but still do the actions. On the third verse,
miss out the word "Shoulders", and so on. Finish
with all the words back in, but singing as fast as
possible!

Magic Box
The teacher has a box with images of objects and
actions.
The teacher takes an image out of the box and the
students will have to know the name of the object.
Students can form groups and they can play as a
competition, getting points on their answers.
The teacher will introduce in the box images of
objects and actions that have been studied
previously in the classroom.

Frankenstein
This activity will take place in pairs.
One of the students draws a monster, for example, with 3
eyes, 4 arms, 5 legs, etc. The drawing will be done with
different colours.
Once the drawing is finished, the student will describe
his/her monster to his/her classmate, who will draw the
monster according to the description given:
My monster has got 3 blue eyes
My monster has got 5 red legs; etc.
Finally, the students will compare their drawings.

Oral Memory
The teacher will prepare 2 sets of memory cards
with 2 different colours on the back of the card
(blue & green).
In one set the teacher will put images of the
vocabulary of the unit and on the other set the
same pictures once again.
The students will have to turn 2 cards over, one of
each colour, and say the name of the 2 images. If
they match the student will keep them, if not
he/she will place them back to the same place.
At the end the student with more cards will be the
winner.

Oral Memory Cards

Word Chain
The teacher asks the children words about a specific
semantic field: family, food, the weather, clothes, etc.
The first student will say one word (apple), the second
student will repeat the previous word and will add a new
one (apple and pear), the third student will repeat the
previous words and will add a new one (apple, pear and
banana), etc.

Chinese Whisper
The teacher asks the students to stand in 3
lines of 8 students each line and will
whisper to the first student standing in each
line a word or sentence which they will
whisper to the next student the line. The
last student will tell aloud what he/she has
heard and then we will compare it to the
original.

Representing Role plays
He teacher gives a role to each student, in
small groups or pairs, and after doing a
demonstration of the dialogue, the teacher
asks the students to reproduce it again.
Students are told what to say.

Dialogues
After giving the students a model of the
dialogue (if oral to work speaking if written to
work reading) they represent it in pairs of in
small groups.
Material for dialogues:

- Finger puppets
- Realia (police cap & tourist camera)

Simulations
The teacher presents the students a specific
situation and the have to solve it using free
language.
The students is not told what to say.
Ex. You are in a restaurant and the waiter
asks you to order your food

Reading Cards
The teacher will show the students different cards
with the name of the object: Reading Cards.
Students, first, listen to the teacher, and in a second
stage, repeat.



Reading cards can be with words or expressions.

Lets play Dominoes
Dominoes is another kind of reading game. Students
are given a number of cards (10 - 20 cards), and they
play with the same rules as if they were playing
dominoes.

Reading Storybooks
The teacher can read
as the same time that
points pictures or
makes gestures to help
students understand
the text.
Students can read the
words or sentences
they already know.

Hand out a worksheet with a wordsearch for
students to complete.

Plays
We can give students with a certain English
knowledge a short and easy play as final
task of the unit, or to represent it at the
school Xmas or Farewell Party.

Reading Memory
The teacher will prepare 2 sets of memory cards
with 2 different colours on the back of the card
(blue & green).
In one set the teacher will put images of the
vocabulary of the unit and on the other their
correspondent words.
The students will have to turn 2 cards over, one of
each colour, and read the word and say the image.
If they match the student will keep them, if not
he/she will place them back to the same place.
At the end the student with more cards will be the
winner.

Washing Line
The teacher gives words to the students to
order to make sentences.
Using clothespins students will hang each
sentence in a washing line and the teacher
will correct the order of the words in the
sentences.

Jigsaws
The teacher prepares 2 images in DIN3 of the same picture
(one printed in color and another in black and white on a
coloured paper).
The printed in color one will be, once cutted, the pieces of
the jigsaw.
The b&w on coloured paper will be the base of the jigsaw
after writing on it the vocabulary words that appear on the
image.
The student will have to read the word on the base in order
to place the piece.

Writing
Some kind of activities you can use to work
the WRITING skill in a Primary Education
class

Wordsearch
However, it can be more interesting for the students
create their own wordsearch.

The teacher will explain the process and each
student will create his/her own word search about
the different topics studied during the year, one
without solutions and another with solutions.

Afterwards, the teacher will photocopy the different
exercises of word search for all the students and
they will be used in the classroom.

Lets play Bingo
The teacher will ask students words about specific topics, such as:
food, sports, classroom objects, colours, countries and nationalities,
etc. The teacher will write the names on the blackboard.
Afterwards, the teacher will ask the students to choose 6 of them and
write them in their notebook.






Finally, the teacher says random words until one student shouts
BINGO (s/he will be the winner!)

Who is who?
All the students will write a small card with information
about themselves. On one side of the card, the students will
write their name. And, on the other side of the card, the
students will write the following information:

I'VE GOT BROTHERS
AND/OR SISTERS

Who is who?
Once the students have written their own
cards, they will read it aloud so that the rest
of the students know a bit more about them.
Afterwards, the teacher will shuffle all the
cards and different students will read
different cards in order to guess who is who.
