Morality and Ethics in Islam

Islam is a comprehensive way of life,


and morality is one of the cornerstones
in Islam.
Morality is one of the main causes of a
nations strength, and immorality is one
of the main causes of a nations decline.
Islam has provided a very effective
moral system.
Whatever leads to the welfare of the
individual or society is morally good
Whatever leads to harm, either of the
individual or society, is morally bad.

The most fundamental characteristics of
a Muslim are piety and humility.
A Muslim must be humble with Allah
and with other people.

Surah Luqman: 18-19
And turn not your face away from
people (with pride), nor walk in
insolence through the earth. Verily, God
likes not each arrogant boaster. And be
moderate in your walking, and lower
your voice. Verily, the harshest of all
voices is the voice of the ass (donkey)

Morality or Akhlak derived from the
word khuluk which means moral, the
way of conduct, ethics.
The akhlak of the Prophet is the Quran.

Principles of Morality in Islam
The key to good conduct is a strong
relation with Allah, who sees all, at all
times and everywhere.
Allah knows the secrets of the hearts
and the intentions behind all actions.
A Muslim must be moral in all
circumstances.
A righteous person always gives charity
to the poor, the orphans and the needy
A righteous person must be reliable and
trustworthy
A righteous must be patience and
perseverance in poverty and ailment

Morality in Islam is meant to reign in
selfish desires, vanity (proud) and bad
habits.
Muslims must not only be virtuous, but
they must also enjoin virtue.
Muslim must not only refrain from evil
and vice, but they must also forbid
them.
You are the best of the nations raised
up for the benefit of men; you enjoin
what is right and forbid the wrong, and
you believe in Allah (Ali Imran: 110)
The good behaviour
(mahmudah)
Amanah, sincere, sabar (patient), truth,
loyal, to ensure safety, serenity and
happiness
The bad behaviour
Pride, jealousy, greed,
Bad ethics will bring problems and
chaos into a society.
The importance of akhlak
Akhlak is the element with wc to
differentiate between animal and
mankind.
Akhlak has a strong relationship with
iman.
What is the Din (i.e. Religion) Ya
Rasulullah?
Prophet answers: Din (Religion) is good
moral conduct.

Who among the mumin has the best
quality of Iman?
The prophet said: a mumin with good
moral conduct.
Ethics
Ethics:
Derived from the latin word ethos
which denotes values and behaviour
that determined the conduct of a group.
The classification of ethics
1.normative: rules and regulations
pertaining to good and bad behaviour
2.metaethics
A)analytical: to analyse all moral
conducts
B)critical: to criticise all moral conducts
that have been analysed, in order to
strengthen the ethics.
3. Applied ethics

Moral conduct that have been
determined by ethics
Good moral is all the behaviour which is
considered as good by ethics.
Bad moral is all the behaviour which is
considered as bad by ethics
Moral and Secularism
Moral which is based on secularism
1.focuses on worldly matters
2.neglects religion
3.good and bad behaviours are based
on moral concepts; as explained below.
Moral Concept
1.empiricism:good and bad behaviours
are based on human experience
2.intuitionism: good and bad behaviours
are based on intuition
3.rationalism: good and bad behaviours
are based on mind. This idea was
supported by Plato, Aristotle, etc.

4.hedonism: good and bad behaviours
are based on nafs
5.traditionalism: the behaviours are
considered as good if it is in line with
tradition/custom
6.evolutionism: behaviour/moral
develops by stages
Islamic Point of View
Human behaviour can be classified into
5:
Wajib/compulsory: daily prayers
Sunat/complimentary: fasting on
Monday and Thursday
Haram: drinking wine
Makruh: eating garlic
Mubah/harus: sleep, eat
Mustahab: Reading the Quran, Nawafil
Conclusion
Akhlaq is important in Islam.
As a muslim, we must have good moral
conduct, and abandon all bad deeds.
