Conjunctions

Objectives
During the lesson, you are expected to:
1. define conjunctions;
2. identify and distinguish the different kinds of
conjunctions; and
3. apply the rules in using conjunctions in
grammar.
One day, while I was doing my
assignment, an owl came to my
window and handed me a letter.
To my surprise, I received a
letter from Hogwarts School of
Witchcraft and Wizardry!
Wildlife suffers from forest fires and
valuable timber is destroyed.
I have never seen a forest fire in
person, but I saw a movie of a
fire-fighting crew trying to control
one.
The first sign of a forest fire must
be reported or suppression crews
cannot control it.
Conjunctions
A conjunction is a word
that joins words, phrases
or clauses.
Mother and father
The day is done, and the darkness falls
from the wings of night.
Kinds of Conjunctions
We have three kinds of conjunctions:

Coordinating conjunctions
Correlative conjunctions
Subordinating conjunctions
Coordinating conjunctions are used to
form compound subjects, compound
predicates, and compound sentences.
AND,
BUT,
OR
USING CONJUNCTIONS TO FORM COMPOUNDS
Compound Subjects Singapore and Korea have both
been influenced by
Confucianism.
Compound Predicate I fear and hope.

Compound Sentence She has plenty things to do, yet
she is just watching TV.
COORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS
CONJUNCTION EXAMPLE MEANING
And
I sing and rejoice.
AND combines another
idea.
But I sing and rejoice
but I am actually
sad.
BUT opposes an idea
Or I could choose to
be sad or I could
be happy.
Or introduces a second
choice, another
possibility.
Correlative conjunctions function
like coordinating conjunctions except
that they go in pairs.

Either or, neither nor, but
and, not only but also
Examples:
Either you choose to be happy or you
choose to be sad.
Neither you nor I have total control over
what happens in life.
But both you and I can do something to
control those conditions.
Not only will that improve our condition in life,
but also improve our attitudes and
disposition.

Other Examples:
Addition: and, also, besides, likewise, not only
but also, moreover, furthermore, as well as, in
addition
Contrast: but, yet, still, however, nevertheless,
on the other hand, notwithstanding, on the
contrary
Alternation: or, nor, either or, neither nor,
otherwise, else
Result: hence, consequently, therefore, thus,
then, wherefore, thereupon
