Introduction
The purpose of this chapter is to give representative examples of digital
speech processing systems and to show how to digital processing
Techniques are used in such system.
Man- Machine communication (MMC) is very rich in the use of digital speech
processing techniques and which shows tremendous potential for widespread
use in the future.
Major Areas of MMC
Voice response system (VRS)
It is man machine communication in one way by voice
Speaker recognition system
Speaker verification and speaker identification
Speech recognition system
Recognizing the utterance or else to understand the spoken utterance
Voice Response System
Vocabulary Storage
Message Composition
Program
Message Formation
Rules
Message Request Output Message
Fig 1. Block diagram of a Voice Response System
Examples for voice response system are
Automated telephone directory assistance system
Stock price quotation system
Two main approaches to the implementations of a voice
response system are
Speech synthesis by rule system
Limited vocabulary system
DIGITAL VOICE RESPONSE SYSTEM
Fig 2. Block diagram of an all digital voice response system
Three major considerations in the design of voice response
system are
Representing and storing the basic vocabulary elements.
Vocabulary preparation and editing speech recordings
Message composition system
GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS IN DESIGN
OF VOICE RESPONSE SYSTEM
Fig 3. Summary of types of speech encoding methods
Three factors are to be considered in the digital coding
method for voice response applications
The bit rate required for speech quality
The complexity of the coding and decoding schemes
The flexibility of the representation
Memory requirements for storage of Digital Speech
Representations
A MULTIPLE OUTPUT DIGITAL VOICE
RESPONSE SYSTEM

Representation of the vocabulary elements using the ADPCM coding techniques.
These vocabulary was stored on fixed head disk for retrieval by the message
Message composition program(MCP) involves logical operations and data transfers.
With most computers and memory systems, there exists the possibility that a single
vocabulary memory can serve the needs of many message channels.
MCP locates the requires vocabulary elements and retrieves them form memory.
The digital representation of the desired messages are stored in buffers in the RAM of
computer. These buffers are accessed by the ADPCM decoders through DMA
channels.
In this way, the system is able to provide the voice output simultaneously.

SPEECH SYNTHESIS CONCATENATION
OF FORMANT-CODED WORDS
Fig 5. Block diagram of VRS based upon a formant representation
The digital representation of the vocabulary elements in terms of pitch
period, voiced/unvoiced classification, intensity and formant frequencies.
The message composition system requires means for obtaining
appropriate word durations and pitch for the desired utterance.
The formant representation provide the capability of modify the
vocabulary elements to fit a particular situation.

TYPICAL APPLICATIONS OF COMPUTER
VOICE RESPONSE SYSTEMS
A system for producing vocal instructions for wiring communications
equipment.
A directory assistance system
A stock price quotation system
A data set testing information system
A flight information system
A speaker verification system
APPLICATION OF VOICE RESPONSE TO WIRING
COMMUNICATION EQUIPMENT
Fig 7. VRS for automatic generation of spoken wiring instructions
ADVANTAGES OF USING A VRS FOR RECORDING WIRING LISTS
Wiring instructions are generally simple commands conveying highly non-
contextual information such as wire color, wire length etc. Thus, smooth,
connected speech is not required.
The instructions can be formed from a relatively small vocabulary
Wire lists are normally designed by computer
Wiring instructions are frequently modified.
INFORMATION RETRIEVAL SYSTEM
Fig 8. Block diagram of an information VRS
In application of the voice response system to problems like directory
assistance, credit inquiries and inventory control, the basic premise is that
the VRS is capable of accessing a data bank of information.
Therefore, it can find the desired information to the user and compose the
appropriate message.
In Fig, data bank can be updated from both external source and VRS.
Example: The stock price quotation system.
