Several terms are commonly used in reference to
particular stage of growth and development . Puberty
primarily refers to the maturational, hormonal and growth
process that occurs when the reproductive organs begin
to function and the secondary sex characteristics
develop.
Adolescence is a period of transition between childhood
and adulthood- a time of rapid physical, cognitive, social,
and emotional maturity as youngsters prepares for
adulthood.
Menarche is the term applied to the first menstruation
period in girls.

Menstruation is the time of change for every
adolescent girl. Due to lack of knowledge
regarding menstruation , the adolescent girls go
through the
Physiological and emotional stresses. In Indian
society do not get adequate knowledge about
their own bodys physiological changes and about
menstruation. If we are providing accurate
knowledge to the adolescent girls, it will be helpful
for them at the time of menstruation.
A study to evaluate the effectiveness
of structured teaching programme (STP)
on knowledge regarding pre preparedness
for menstruation and menstrual hygiene
among pre-adolescent girls in selected
rural schools at Hassan district .

To assess the knowledge regarding pre preparedness
for menstruation and menstrual hygiene among pre-
adolescent girls before structured teaching programme.
To administer STP regarding pre preparedness for
menstruation and menstrual hygiene among pre-
adolescent girls.
To evaluate the effectiveness of STP regarding pre
preparedness for menstruation and menstrual hygiene
among pre-adolescent girls after structured teaching
programme.
To find the association between knowledge of
pre-adolescent girls regarding pre preparedness
for menstruation and menstrual hygiene with their
selected socio demographic variables.

Independent variable:
In this study the independent variable is
Structured teaching programme.
Dependent variable:
Knowledge of pre-adolescent girls regarding pre
preparedness for menstruation and menstrual
hygiene is the dependent variable in this study.

The study was conducted in
selected rural schools at Hassan
district, Karnataka.

The target population of the present
study includes pre-adolescent girls studying in
selected rural schools at Hassan district.
Samples
The sample used for this study was
80 pre-adolescent girls studying in selected rural
schools at Hassan district, those who fulfil the
inclusion and exclusion criteria.

Sample size
The sample comprise of 80 pre-
adolescent girls from selected rural
schools at Hassan district.
Sampling technique
Probability ( simple random ) sampling
technique.

Inclusion criteria:-
Pre-adolescent girls between the age group of 9-12
years.
Pre-adolescent girls who are willing to participate in the
study.
Pre-adolescent girls who are not attained menarche.
Pre-adolescent girls studying in selected rural schools at
Hassan district available at the time of study.
Exclusion criteria
Pre-adolescent girls who are not willing to participate
Pre-adolescent girls who are attained menarche.

A structured questionnaire was used to
assess the level of knowledge of pre-
adolescent girls regarding pre preparedness
for menstruation and menstrual hygiene.

The tool was organized in to two parts:
PART I Socio Demographic profile contains 8items-
age, religion, type of the family, educational status of the
mother, occupation of father, dietary habits, place of
residence and source of information regarding pre
preparedness for menstruation and menstrual hygiene.
PART II Contains 30 structured questionnaire
seeking knowledge of pre-adolescent girls regarding pre
preparedness for menstruation and menstrual hygiene

The constructed tool was given to five experts;
four from the field of obg nursing, one from
obstetrician and gynaecologist. The experts
were chosen based on their experience and
clinical expertise. As per the suggestions and
recommendations of the experts, necessary
modifications were done in the tool.
The Reliability of the questionnaire was assessed by
using split half technique Smearmon browns
prophecy formula and Karl Pearsons correlation
method.
R= 2r/1+r
R=Reliability of co-efficient of correlation
for whole test.
r=Reliability of co-efficient of correlation
for half test.
The obtained value is r = 0.81, which indicates the
tool is reliable.

Association between the selected
demographic variable and the pre test level of
knowledge.
Chi-square test is used to identify significance
of association. There is no significant association is
found between any demographic variables and pre-
test knowledge score of pre-adolescent girls.

As per the 1
st
objective, Overall pre-test knowledge score on pre
preparedness for menstruation and menstrual hygiene is 11.39 with
SD of 2.084 mean percentage was 37.97%

As per the 2
nd
and 3
rd
objective, Overall post test knowledge
score on pre preparedness for menstruation and menstrual hygiene
among pre-adolescent girls mean knowledge is 25.72 with SD of
1.575, mean percentage of 85.73%

As per the 4
th
objectives the 2 value shows that there is no
significant association between any demographic variables and pre
test knowledge score of pre-adolescent girls.

A similar study can be undertaken with a large sample to generalize
the findings.
A study can be conducted in community setting.
Similar study can be conducted among the health professionals.
True experimental study can be conducted among the nursing
students.

The present study was conducted to evaluate the
effectiveness of structured teaching programme on the
knowledge of pre-adolescent girls regarding pre
preparedness for menstruation and menstrual hygiene
among pre-adolescent girls in selected rural schools at
Hassan district. Data was collected, analyzed and
interpreted in terms of the objectives formulated. The
over all pre test knowledge percentage was 37.97%. over
all post- test knowledge percentage was 85.73%. This
shows the effectiveness of structured teaching
programme in improving knowledge of pre-adolescent girls
regarding pre preparedness for menstruation and
menstrual hygiene.
The findings of the study recommended for the
further interventional approaches in developing
knowledge of pre-adolescent girls regarding pre
preparedness for menstruation and menstrual
hygiene. The present study proved the necessity
of the teaching programme in improving the
knowledge of pre-adolescent girls.
