Objective
The objective of this work was to evaluate the
moisture content and salts concentration for
Trametes versicolor cellulase production by
solid state fermentation, using sugarcane
bagasse as substrate.

mg. of glucose/mL

Due to depletion of petroleum fuel and the

pollution they cause, bioethanol represents
and interesting alternative. The amount of
linocellulosic waste represents an important
source for obtention of fermentable sugars.
Two steps are required in different
conditions: first, lignocellulosic material
must be degraded; the use of cellulases for
this step is interesting because this process
is environmentally friendly and by the lack
of by-products. The second step is the
fermentation to ethanol. The first step can
be carried out by chemical methods or using
enzymes, like cellulases. The study of
cellulases has a high importance because
there is currently a great interest in using
these enzymes for various industrial
processes such as waste treatment, the
conversion of vegetable waste into fertilizer
or feed, or new processes in the textiles or
the manufacture of detergents, as well as in
brewing and wine, pulp and paper, and
biofuels production (Ghose, 1987). A
method for obtaining cellulases is by solid
state fermentation (SSF), which offers a
number of economic advantages over
conventional submerged fermentation
processes due to low humidity levels and a
high productivity (Aguilar et al., 2001).
Fungi are the preferred organisms due to its
ability to grow in such conditions.

Conclusions
The salts concentration and moisture content can
affect both the microbial growth and cellulase
production, as well as impact on cost at large
scale. This study set up parameters to be included
in further studies for cellulase production.
